Senior Legion holds off Chaffee for district win

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The Ford & Sons American Legion baseball team turned away Chaffee 11-10 in a nine-inning district game Sunday.

Shane Kistner was 3-for-5 with a double and pair of RBIs for the Cape Girardeau team (10-9 all, 4-2 district). Tim Wincewicz and Matt Wulfers were 2-for-4. Jeff Brosey added a double.

Seth Hudson pitched 3 1/3 innings for the win. He gave up four runs (two earned) and five hits.

Tyler Cookson was 3-for-4 and Travis Bickings 3-for-6 with a double and four RBIs for Chaffee, which had the winning runs on base in the ninth before its final out. Trey Graviett was 2-for-5. Ryne Wood added a double.

Zach Horman took the loss, giving up seven runs (four earned) and 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Jackson Legion unloads offense vs. Crestwood

ST. LOUIS -- Three players had three hits apiece in the Jackson American Legion's 12-7 win Sunday at Crestwood.

Jackson (14-7) had 17 hits altogether, led by Bryan Austin (3-for-5, two doubles), Josh Parham (3-for-3, three RBIs), Dusty Roberts (3-for-5), Jake Carter (2-for-5) and Josh Vandeven (2-for-5).

Tim Davis pitched the win in eight innings. He gave up 12 of Crestwood's 14 hits and gave up seven runs, four earned.

Jones wins twice in Kart Summer Shootout

BLODGETT, Mo. -- Ty Jones of Jackson, Tenn., won a pair of events late Saturday in the Kart Summer Shootout at SEMO Motor Speedway, including a victory in the stock medium class worth $1,000.

Jones came back 30 minutes later to win the finale in the stock light division.

Among local finishers, Colby Burgess of Cape Girardeau won in the junior sportsman champ class. Destiney Scott of Jackson, Mo., was second in the yard kart division.

Other division winners: Brian Smith of Evansville, Ind., in stock heavy; Cordie Burkman of Malden, Mo., in yard kart; Channing Lang of Paducah, Ky., in rookie; Greggory Drew of Judsonia, Ark., in junior stock; Rusty Stagen of Oakland, Tenn., in over-35; Justin Stearns of Carbondale, Ill., in junior champ; and Cody Elliott of Mansfield, Mo., in super heavy.

Myers' streak ends at 8; Shanks, Hall win at ATPR

BENTON, Mo. -- Alex Shanks and Chris Hall won the feature races for the top division late Saturday at Auto Tire and Parts Racepark, while Cline Myers Jr. will try to start work next week on another streak after his was broken.

Myers, of Scott City, Mo., finished second to Dietrich Bollinger in the pure stock feature, ending Myers' track-record winning streak at eight. Myers was unbeaten this season in the class.

Patrick Naeger of Perryville, Mo., was third.

Shanks, of Marion, Ill., led points leader Robbie Standridge of Springfield, Ill., to the finish in sprints. Jason Evans of Arnold, Mo., was third.

Hall, of Sikeston, Mo., led points leader Jeff Parmer of Fenton, Mo., and Leo Kiefer of Perryville in modifieds.

In cruisers, Chris and Lisa Scheffer of Dutchtown, Mo., won the finale.

Cape Junior Legion wins Mississippi tournament

The Cape Girardeau Junior American Legion team battled back from an early loss to win the Triple Crown title at Southaven, Miss., on Sunday.

In the last of the team's five tournament games, Cape defeated Southaven 8-0 in five innings for the title. Winning pitcher Mark Johnston gave up just two hits; teammate Blake Urhahan was 3-for-3.

Cape improved to 25-13 and qualified for the Triple Crown World Series in Colorado later in the summer.

In earlier tournament games, Cape:

Lost to Memphis First Mercantile 5-4. Urhahn took the loss, but struck out 14.

Defeated the Memphis Grays 16-4 in five innings. Jake Welch pitched the win and gave up two hits. Lee Essner and Sean Bard each had two hits.

Defeated the St. Louis Redbirds 11-2. Jeremy Brinkmeyer got the win and allowed four hits. Mitch Craft had a pair of doubles.

Defeated the Kansas City Monarchs 3-2. Essner pitched the win and gave up three hits. Craft and Matt Hellrich each had two hits; Hellrich had a two-run double.

Bucher signs to play baseball at Lambuth

ORAN, Mo. -- Oran outfielder Matt Bucher has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn.

Bucher, the only senior on an Oran team that finished third in Class 1A the past season, was a three-year starter for the Eagles. He was selected Scott-Mississippi Conference second team, batting .327 with 17 RBIs.

Oran finished the season 20-5.
