DUBLIN, Ohio -- Justin Leonard had an eagle and a tap-in birdie on consecutive holes for a 7-under 65 to surge past University of Texas roommate Harrison Frazar and take a one-stroke lead into a suddenly soggy weekend at the Memorial.

Tiger Woods is nowhere near the lead in the tournament he has won the last three years. He had a 70 and was 10 strokes out of the lead, a long shot to become the first player in 75 years to win the same event four years in a row.

Another stunner: Jack Nicklaus made it to the weekend.

The 62-year-old tournament host birdied the 17th hole and shot a 74, allowing him to make the cut on the PGA Tour for the first time in two years.

Leonard was at 10-under 134, in position to win for the third time since September. Frazar had eight birdies in a round of 65 that left him one stroke behind.

Vijay Singh (67), Stewart Cink (70) and Bob Tway (71) were at 136, while Phil Mickelson (66) was in a large group at 139.

Corning Classic: Jean Bartholomew shot a 5-under 67 to tie Laura Diaz for the second-round lead in the LPGA Corning Classic.

Diaz, who began the day tied for the lead with Beth Bader and Sherri Steinhauer at 6 under, carded three birdies and stayed out of trouble in shooting a 69 for a 9-under 135 total.

Rookies Beth Bauer and Jung Yeon Lee of South Korea, each vying for her first victory on tour, were one stroke behind. Bauer shot a 68, and Lee had a 69.

Bartholomew took advantage of the short par-5s, going 6 under on the four holes over the first two days. Her 8-foot eagle putt on the 449-yard, par-5 fifth put her at 8 under. She followed that with a birdie on No. 9, then parred out on the back nine.

VOLVO CHAMPIONSHIP: Colin Montgomerie hit a spectator in the head with his tee shot and missed a 2-foot par putt on the final hole, part of a late collapse that dropped him out of the lead midway at Virginia Water, England.

Montgomerie, bothered by a back injury, dropped three shots on the final four holes and finished with a 1-under 71, two strokes behind Denmark's Anders Hansen.

Hansen shot a 7-under 65 for an 11-under 133 total on Wentworth's West Course. Argentina's Eduardo Romero (68) was tied with Montgomerie, and Zimbabwe's Mark McNulty (69) and Spain's Carlos Rodiles (67) followed at 8 under.

Montgomerie's drive on the 16th hit a spectator, who was taken to a hospital.

Montgomerie, beaten by Tiger Woods in a playoff Monday in the Deutsche Bank Open, won the tournament three straight years starting in 1998.

Farmers Charity Classic: FORMER AMATEUR STARS JAY SIGEL AND DAVID EGER SHOT 5-UNDER 67S TO SHARE THE LEAD AT ADA, MICH.

JOHN JACOBS, NO. 2 ON THE SENIOR PGA TOUR MONEY LIST, OPENED WITH A 68, AND TWO-TIME DEFENDING CHAMPION LARRY NELSON TOPPED A NINE-PLAYER GROUP AT 69 ON THE EGYPT VALLEY COUNTRY CLUB COURSE.

THE 58-YEAR-OLD SIGEL BIRDIED FOUR OF THE FIRST EIGHT HOLES AND ADDED BIRDIES AT NOS. 12 AND 13 BEFORE DROPPING A STROKE ON NO. 16 WITH HIS LONE BOGEY. THE 67 IS HIS BEST OPENING ROUND SINCE AUGUST.
