ST. LOUIS -- Before meeting Fox on Thursday, Cape Girardeau Central High's girls basketball team already had in hand the championship of the round-robin Oakville Tournament.
But lackluster Central was not.
Thanks to a stifling defensive effort, the Lady Tigers routed Fox 73-12. They improved to 3-0.
"We played well defensively at the very beginning of the game," said Central coach Darrick Smith.
Central held a 27-2 first-quarter advantage and left 41-3 at halftime.
Central's Kim Aslinger scored a game-high 20 points and Katie Dougherty added 12.
Central's JV team won the Oakville Tournament with a 40-10 win over Fox. Sarah Hyslop led the Lady Tigers with 12 points.
Delta 54, East Prairie 23
EAST PRAIRIE -- Delta won its first game, a rout of East Prairie.
The Lady Bobcats' 16-4 first-quarter lead stretched to 30-11 at halftime.
Kristin Fish scored 21 points for Delta (1-2) and Amanda Cook delivered 17.
Kelly 70, Chaffee 61
CHAFFEE -- Marissa Essner scored 19 points to lead four Lady Hawks in double figures as Kelly won on the road Thursday night.
Audrey Burford added 12 points, Bridgette Riley 12 and Natalie Lewer 10.
Stevie Burks scored a game-high 24 points for Chaffee (0-2) while Jill Little added 17 and Amy Burnett contributed 12.
Kelly opened a double-digit lead in the first quarter, going ahead 21-7, and led 37-27 at halftime. The Lady Hawk took a 57-43 lead into the fourth quarter.
Chaffee won the JV game 39-28 behind 10 points from April Stafford.
Valle Tournament
STE. GENEVIEVE -- St. Vincent, trailing by five, was outscored 14-4 in the second quarter and dropped its second-round game to Ste. Genevieve, 60-36.
St. Vincent fell to 1-2.
The Squaws were paced by Sara Cissell's 17 points.
Boys basketball
I-55 Classic
SCOTT CITY -- Scott City and Hayti won games in the classic's North bracket.
Scott City stopped St. Vincent 89-44 and Hayti edged East Prairie 70-67.
Jon Beck hit five 3-pointers and scored 27 points in Scott City's win. Luke Sample added three 3-pointers and 20 points and Ronald Watson had 12 points.
St. Vincent, playing its first game after only five practices, trailed 35-26 early in the second quarter and 43-26 at halftime. The Rams then outscored St. Vincent 35-8 in the third quarter.
Todd Meyer's 11 points led the Indians.
In Hayti's win, the Indians' Lee Marvin Hamilton scored 20 points and Ortiz Banks contributed 18.
Oran Tournament
ORAN -- Kelly and Gideon both advanced to tonight's championship game.
In semifinal games, Kelly beat Twin Rivers 67-35 and Gideon outlasted Scott County Central 69-68. Kelly and Gideon will meet at 8:30 p.m.
Kelly's Russ Mothershead had a game-high 24 points and Jim Hulshof added 21. The Hawks led 16-9 after one quarter and 40-19 at halftime.
Gideon trailed Scott County Central 53-49 before outscoring the Braves 20-15 in the final period. Vincent Stevens led Central with 25 potns and Jreece Johnson had 19.
In a consolation game, Richland edged Oran's JV team 45-41. Oran held a 2-0 first quarter lead and led 11-5 at halftime.
Scott County Central will play Twin Rivers in the third-place game at 7 and Richland and Oran will meet in the consolation game at 5:30.
Woodland Tournament
MARBLE HILL -- Delta and Woodland each pulled out close victories in semifinal games and will meet in the tournament's championship game tonight.
Delta came from behind and beat Bloomfield 43-37 and Woodland edged Advanance 59-57.
Trailing 37-21 entering the fourth quarter, Delta outscored Bloomfield 21-9 in the final period.
Delta's Greg Voekler scored a team-high 18 points and Josh Altenhthal added 10.
C.W. Stacy paced Woodland with 22 points and David Massa tallied 17. Advance was led by Garrett Broshuis' 26 points. Daniel Turner had 19 points.
In a consolation game, Zalma topped Oak Ridge 78-73. Tim Burchett had 29 points for Zalma, Gandy Wade totaled 16 and Chris Canoy and Junior Smith each added 13.
Five players scored in double figures for Oak Ridge, led by Eric Hobeck's 16 points.
