ST. LOUIS -- The Cape Central Lady Tigers ended up taking fourth place in the Cor Jesu softball tournament after splitting four games on Friday and Saturday.
Central (4-2) lost both games on Saturday, falling first to the defending state champs Blue Springs 8-1, then losing a squeaker to Lindbergh in the third-place game 2-1.
Against Blue Springs, Cassie Gross suffered the loss in a game where the winning run was scored on a throwing error. Gross allowed just one earned run, while Amber Voerg had the team's lone run batted in.
Gross also suffered the loss against Blue Springs, going four innings. She allowed two earned runs on two hits. Holly Schnurbusch provided two hits.
On Friday, Cape Central defeated St. Louis-Notre Dame 5-3 behind the pitching of Schnurbusch. No player had more than one hit or more than one RBI in that game, but Central coach Amy Blattel said the defense was stellar as the Lady Tigers turned a doubleplay and picked off two runners.
Cape Central then knocked off Rosary 6-0. Gross got the win as Jessica McDonald and Tricia Klipfel had two hits each. Gross struck out three, walked two and allowed six hits.
Jackson also competed in the tournament and posted a 1-3 record. The Lady Indians committed 10 errors in its four games as 13 of the 14 runs they allowed were unearned.
"We have to tighten up our defense," said Jackson coach Becky Riney, who saw her team fall to 1-5 on the season.
Jackson suffered two losses on Friday, a 3-1 setback to Lindbergh and a 2-1 loss to Jefferson City. Heather Tuschoff suffered the loss against Lindbergh while Ashley Snow took the loss against Jefferson City. On Saturday, Cor Jesu blanked Jackson 2-0 as Snow suffered the loss. Jackson closed the tournament with a 7-6 victory over Rosary as Casey Hobeck picked up the win with relief help from Tuschoff.
For the tournament, Amanda Bollinger led the Lady Indian offense by going 6-for-12 with four RBIs. Sammie Thurmond went 3-for-10 and Lindsey Meyr was 3-for-12.
Jackson returns to action on Wednesday when it visits Cape Central.
