Lady Tigers pound out 12-2 victory

Cape Girardeau Central High's softball team inched a bit closer to the .500 mark Tuesday afternoon as the Lady Tigers picked up their second straight victory by routing visiting Sikeston 12-2 in a five-inning, run-rule affair.

Laura Beard allowed just three hits as Central improved to 9-12 on the season. She struck out four and didn't walk a batter.

Megan McDonald had a triple among her two hits and Ashley Foutch belted a double among her two as Central had 10 hits overall. Jessie Snell added an inside-the-park home run.

Central also won the JV game 13-3 in five innings.

KELLY 6, POPLAR BLUFF 1

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Bridgett Riley dominated on the mound and at the plate as the Lady Hawks improved to 10-2.

Riley held Poplar Bluff to four hits and struck out five. At the plate, she went 2-for-4 with two inside-the-park home runs and three runs batted in.

Sara Essner went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Allison Johnson went 2-for-3.

CARBONDALE, ILL. 3, NOTRE DAME 1

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Notre Dame had a letdown after its huge 1-0 victory over nemesis St. Mary's Saturday.

The Bulldogs (6-2-1) found themselves in a 3-0 hole by halftime.

"We had three starters out," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn. "So that was part of it. It rained and it was sloppy and that was part of it. We played a pretty decent second half, but we played a lousy first half. But if you're going to have a game like this, it's better to have it now than later on."

Tyler Cuba scored Notre Dame's goal on a penalty kick early in the second half.

Notre Dame's JV lost 1-0 to fall to 3-2-1 on the season.

VOLLEYBALL

NOTRE DAME 15-10-15, WOODLAND 9-15-4

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Deana McCormick served seven straight points in the decisive third game as the Lady Bulldogs improved to 12-2-1.

Jennifer VanGennip had five kills for Notre Dame while McCormick and Courtney Vickery added four each. Emily Worley came up with eight digs.

For Woodland (5-8), Emily Davis had seven points, six kills and five service aces. Jeni Jackson had seven digs, Stacie Greer added six digs and Danyel Farrell recorded four assists.

Notre Dame's JV romped 15-4, 15-6.

JACKSON 15-15, SIKESTON 9-2

JACKSON, Mo. -- The Lady Indians drubbed Sikeston to improve to 12-2-1.

Jenna Leet pounded a team-high four kills, while Jennifer Mesey provided three kills and four blocks. Casey Crites had six aces and four blocks. Erin Hartman and Jessie Koeper posted 10 and five assists, respectively.

Jackson's freshmen won 15-2, 15-2 and its JV won 15-7, 15-7.

MEADOW HEIGHTS 15-15, CHAFFEE 1-2

PATTON, Mo. -- Meadow Heights met little resistance as it pushed its record to 15-2.

The Lady Panthers' Holly Boyd registered six kills and teammate Tessa Bollinger notched five kills. Jami Fulton finished with 14 assists.

SCOTT CITY 15-15, ORAN 13-11

ORAN, Mo. -- Scott City knocked off Oran in two games despite 19 kills and seven blocks by the Lady Eagles' Maria Eftink.

Shana Wadlington led the Lady Rams with eight kills, followed by McKenzie Cartwright and Amanda O'Brien with four apiece. Sidney Baer added three kills.

Oran (8-7-1) also got 11 assists and five digs from Candice Duncan. Teresa Hodges, Jessica Prino and Ashley Dirnberger all recorded six service points.

PERRYVILLE 3-15-15, ST. PIUS 15-13-8

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- After having trouble with their passing early, the Lady Pirates recovered for the win.

Katie Kutz had an impressive night for Perryville (5-7-1). She had 15 points, nine aces, five kills and four blocks.

"She's jump-serving for us and she definitely gave us a spark," Perryville coach Amy Birk said.

Emily Amberger had five points and four kills. Rachel Wunderlich had five kills while Lisa Pecaut contributed 18 assists and six digs.

ZALMA 15-15, OAK RIDGE 4-5

ZALMA, Mo. -- Zalma improved to 7-6 with a convincing victory.

Kasey Burchett served 11 straight points in the first set, including an ace.

Melissa Fish led Zalma with eight kills, five digs and three aces. Mary Kay Hovis added five kills.

HERCULANEUM 4-15-15

ST. VINCENT 15-13-9

HERCULANEUM, Mo. -- St. Vincent fell to 2-7-1 after a narrow defeat.

Mary Beth Reiss led the Squaws with five kills and Megan Moll had four.

CROSS COUNTRY

OAK RIDGE MEET

OAK RIDGE, Mo. -- Meadow Heights' boys and Delta's girls emerged victorious in the first meet ever hosted by Oak Ridge.

Meadow Height's boys totaled 15 points while Oak Ridge had 25. Delta did not have enough runners for a team score. Boys scores were composed of the top four finishers.

Delta's top three girls combined for just 10 points, edging Oak Ridge by a point.

Evan Kamp of Meadow Heights was the overall boys winner with a time of 13 minutes, 17 seconds on the 2.25-mile layout at Oak Ridge High School.

Delta's Rebecca Cook (16:35) paced the girls' competition, edging Oak Ridge's Melinda Schoen by a second.

"We're hoping to make this an annual small school meet," said Oak Ridge coach Jason Niswonger.

Delta's Kevin Bartels took first place in the junior varsity boys race.
