Cassie Gross fired a one-hitter as Cape Central won its season-high sixth straight game with a 6-0 victory over Vienna, Ill., Saturday at Arena Park.

Gross walked two and struck out three as the Lady Tigers improved to 16-5 on the season.

"Vienna was a good hitting team. Pitching-wise we did a good job keeping the ball away, and we made defensive plays when we needed to," said Cape Central coach Amy Blattel.

The Lady Tigers made just one error behind Gross' one-hit pitching.

Cape Central, which had just four hits, scored the only run it would need in the first inning on an Ashley Voerg RBI double. The Lady Tigers added two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth, two scoring on an RBI double by Jessica McDonald.

Farmington 5-8, Delta 4-3

FARMINGTON -- Rebecca Cook allowed one hit and struck out 13, but it wasn't enough as Delta lost 5-4 in eight innings to Farmington Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Delta also lost the second game 8-3.

Cook, who allowed two earned runs and also issued five walks, went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and a run batted in.

In the second game, Tiffany Johnson went 5 2-3 innings in the loss for Delta (2-6). She allowed eight runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out three.

Ashley Martin went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

SOCCER

Cape Central 1, Fort Osage 1

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Tigers finished the Capital City Tournament with two ties as it battled Fort Osage to a draw on Saturday.

Cape Central (6-5-2), which fought Park Hill to a 0-0 draw on Friday, saw its third tournament game on Saturday get rained out.

Against Fort Osage, Jon Mark Thompson staked Central to a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the game off an assist from Cody Hill. Fort Osage tied the game at the 59-minute mark when a loose ball off a corner kick found the Tiger net.

"We played well, but we couldn't put the ball in the net," said Cape Central coach Tom Doyle. "We had three shots hit the post."

Fort Osage won Central's pool with a 1-0-1 mark.

CROSS COUNTRY

Hancock Invitational

ST. LOUIS -- Cape Central's cross country team turned in a total of six medalists Saturday at the huge 3.1-mile Hancock Invitational Saturday.

Three boys and three girls finished in the top 40 and earned medals including Justin Hawkins (10th, 17:02), Mark Stone (13th, 17:07), Gabe Austin (35th, 17:44), Kim Pancoast (11th, 21:04), Whitney Pingel (37th, 22:11) and Magin Patrick (38th, 22:14).

Central's varsity boys took seventh among 21 teams with 179 points, while the girls took sixth with 185 points.

"We feel good about how we did," said Cape Central coach Mark Hahn. "All of our kids ran hard. It was our first 5K of the year which is the race we run at state so that's important to get that under our belt."

Finishing out the top five for Central's boys were Mike Gerber (66th, 18:27) and Ross Tilghman (72nd, 18:40). For the girls Rachel Sprigg took 49th in 22:44 and Casey Brennan took 50th in 22:50.

DeSmet won the varsity boys race, while Kirkwood won the girls.

In junior varsity competition, Josh Revelle was a medalist, taking 16th in 19:17. Though no Lady Tiger medaled, Central's junior varsity took 11th of 42 teams.

Central's freshmen-sophomore team took 18th among 43 teams.

Jackson

Jackson had two Lady Indians earn medals as the team took seventh with 194 points.

Krista Mouser led the way with a 23rd-place finish in 21:31. Nicole Fadler finished 31st in 21:59 and Carol Koenig took 36th in 22:05. Laura Unverferth (46th, 22:36) and Erin Mayfield (58th, 23:33) rounded out Jackson's scoring.

Jackson's boys took 15th, led by Josh Minson who took 61st in 18:22. Following him were Jody Ressell (80th, 18:44), Michael Birk (99th, 20:07), Ricky Fiener (106th, 20:44) and Tyler Murphy (115th, 23:17).

Two Jackson runners medaled in the freshmen-sophomore race. Joe Golightly took 13th in 18:46 and Pat Kennedy took 29th in 19:18.

In the junior varsity boys race, Kyle Miller led Jackson with a time of 23:42. Chelsey Brown posted a team-best 25:57 in finishing 27th in the junior varsity girls race.

Perryville

The Pirates had three medalists in the Blue Division as the boys took fifth among 41 teams with 213 points. LaDue won the race with 137 points.

Nathan Moore led the way for Perryville with a 11th place finish in 17:22. Jacob Schneider took 15th in 17:30 and Kent Hadler took 19th in 17:37. Tyson Rellergert (79th, 18:45) and Tim Chitwood (115th, 19:16) rounded out Perryville's scoring.

In the varsity girls competition, Katrina Bockhorn took 96th in 23:48 and Hannah Steffens took 167th in 25:04.

Kelly

Kelly's varsity boys took 17th of 41 teams with 474 points in the Blue Division, while the girls scored 798 points to take 32nd.

For Kelly's boys, Adam Doughhetee earned a medal by finishing 39th in 18:03, the second-fastest time a Kelly runner has posted in the Hancock Invitational. Doughhetee was followed by Lance Scheffer (89th, 18:52), Ashley Hahn (106th, 19:04), Andrew Mothershead (143rd, 19:35) and Lance Ferrell (148th, 19:42).

The Lady Hawks were led by Shannon Lawson, who finished 141st in 24:35. She was followed by Laura Ruff (178th, 25:23), Katrena Martin (194th, 26:32), Nancy Lewer (210th, 27:19) and Megan Nelson (211th, 27:20).

VOLLEYBALL

Jackson Freshman Tournament

JACKSON, Mo. -- Perryville won the Jackson Freshman Tournament with a three-set victory over Poplar Bluff in the championship match. Perryville dropped the first set 8-15, but bounced back with 15-12, 15-4 victories.

Poplar Bluff won its pool with victories over St. Vincent (15-15, 15-7), Cape Central (15-11, 15-2) and Jackson (15-12, 15-12).
