Cape Central's girls softball team combined solid pitching, timely hitting and good defense at key moments to blank cross-town rival Notre Dame 4-0 Thursday afternoon at Notre Dame High School.

The Lady Tigers (9-3) broke open a close game in the top of the fifth inning. Leading 1-0, Amber Voerg doubled in one run and Jessica McDonald drove home two more with a double to deep left field.

Cassie Gross had another solid outing for the Lady Tigers as she walked one and struck out three en route to a four-hit shutout.

"We made a few key plays defensively to stop Notre Dame threats," said Cape Central coach Amy Blattel, "and we put some hits together when we needed them."

Notre Dame's Mika Williamson suffered the loss. She went seven innings, allowed seven hits and struck out seven.

Sara Berkbigler had two hits for Notre Dame, which fell to 7-4 on the season.

"We played well except for two or three plays, which against a good team like Cape Central led to a couple of runs," said Notre Dame coach Chris Janet. "We really played well otherwise and I thought both pitchers pitched well."

The Notre Dame JV squad posted a 5-4 win over Cape Central.

SOCCER

Notre Dame 2, Sikeston 1

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Notre Dame bested SEMO Conference foe Sikeston to remain undefeated with a 5-0 record.

Notre Dame, coming off two huge back-to-back wins over rival Cape Central, could not be faulted if it suffered a bit of a mental letdown.

"We played hard and really quite well," said coach Brad Wittenborn. "We just weren't as sharp as in past games. We had a lot of shots just missed, hitting the crossbars and goal posts. But that is not to take anything away from a much-improved Sikeston team."

The Bulldogs got goals from Scott Wittenborn and Tim Buerck (unassisted) in the first half. Matt Pobst assisted on Wittenborn's goal.

Sikeston got a goal from Brandon DeWitt in the second half, the first goal scored on Notre Dame this season.

Notre Dame's JV won 7-0. Tyler Cuba led the way with three goals.

SOCCER

Jackson 3, Carbondale 2

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Jackson's Michael Schuette deposited two passes from Patrick Kohm, including the game-winner with about two minutes to play.

Schuette had opened the scoring with a goal less than one minute into the game and Matt Buttry extended the lead to 2-0 by halftime.

Carbondale netted two goals in the second half to tie the game 2-2, but Schuette scored late to lift Jackson (4-2) to its fourth straight win.

"I feel we let our guard down in the second half," said Jackson coach Zack Walton. "Once they tied the game we started playing better again."

Carbondale won the JV game 3-2. Stuart Knowlan and Jeffrey Beck netted goals for Jackson.
