HERCULANEUM -- Perryville pressed the life out of Herculaneum from the start, holding its host to just two first-quarter points en route to a 60-32 Jefferson County Conference victory Monday night in girls basketball action.
Perryville, which carried a commanding 18-2 lead into the second quarter, improved to 4-8 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Stacy Baer led four Lady Pirates in double figures with 17 points. Amanda Schumer scored eight of her 16 points in the opening quarter and finished the night with four of Perryville's six 3-pointers. Jamie Amberger added 12 points and Amanda Nuyt connected for two 3-pointers and 10 points.
"Our first quarter was outstanding," said Perryville coach Vickie Lohmann, noting an effective full-court press. "We played some great defense."
Perryville took a 31-12 lead into halftime and was never threatened for the remainder of the game.
Jackson 71, New Madrid 46
JACKSON -- The Lady Indians used a balanced attack as they evened their season record at 5-5.
Andrea Koeper tallied 14 points to lead Jackson while Cherish Tillman finished with 13 and Jenna Leet and Alisha Burns had 11 apiece.
Jackson outscored New Madrid in all four quarters. The Lady Indians led 19-13 after one quarter and 34-24 by halftime. The Lady Indians extended their advantage to 53-38 by the close of the third quarter.
St. Vincent 54, Hillsboro 47
PERRYVILLE -- St. Vincent built a 10-point lead by halftime on its way to improving to 8-3 on the season.
Jessica Lakenan paced St. Vincent with 21 points while Danielle Sutterer tallied 15 and Sara Cissell had 11.
The Squaws led 19-12 after the opening quarter and 31-21 at halftime. St. Vincent took a 44-31 lead into the final period.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Steelville 62, Perryville 55
CHESTER, Ill. -- Perryville took a 38-34 lead into the fourth quarter but was unable to hang on in first-round action in the eight-team Chester Tournament Monday.
Chester outscored Perryville (2-8) 28-17 in the final eight minutes.
Michael Downen led the Pirates with 16 points while Ryan Wichern added 14.
Perryville will play the loser of the Chester-New Athens game Thursday at 6 p.m. in consolation play.
