KU routs Houston in Fort Worth Bowl

Jason Swanson threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns, one more than he had in the regular season, and the Kansas Jayhawks beat Houston 42-13 Friday night in the Fort Worth Bowl for their first winning season and first bowl victory in 10 years.

Tailback Jon Cornish turned two shovel passes from Swanson into scores, and also rushed for 101 yards on 16 carries. Brian Murph, who hadn't returned a kick all season, turned a muffed punt into an 85-yard score in the first quarter that put the Jayhawks (7-5) ahead to stay. He also caught a 48-yard TD pass.

Kansas had been in only one other bowl since a victory over UCLA in the 1995 Aloha Bowl capped a 10-2 season. The Jayhawks lost 56-26 to North Carolina State in the 2003 Tangerine Bowl that ended Mark Mangino's second year as coach.

Houston (6-6) has lost six straight bowls since winning the 1980 Garden State Bowl.

Poinsettia Bowl Navy 51, Colorado St. 30

On the same field where Barry Sanders ran wild 17 years earlier, speedy little Reggie Campbell of Navy claimed his share of bowl lore.

Campbell tied the NCAA bowl record with five touchdowns late Thursday night and had 290 all-purpose yards, leading the Midshipmen to a win over Colorado State (6-6) at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

The 5-foot-6 sophomore slotback had touchdown catches of 55 and 34 yards, and scoring runs of 22, 2 and 21 yards.

Sanders scored five touchdowns and ran for 222 yards in the 1988 Holiday Bowl, leading Oklahoma State to a 62-14 win over Wyoming at what was then Jack Murphy Stadium.The other players with five TDs in a bowl were Michigan's Neil Snow against Stanford in the 1902 Rose Bowl and San Jose State's Sheldon Canley against Central Michigan in the 1990 California Bowl.

He ran 16 times for 116 yards, caught two passes for 89 yards and returned four kickoffs for 85 yards for Navy (8-4). The nation's top-ranked rushing team with an average of 305.2 yards, ran for 467 yards and had 611 yards in total offense.
