The Kennett Indians have found their next boys basketball coach and athletic director.

Kennett High School has hired longtime Twin Rivers coach and high school principal Seth McBroom to succeed veteran coach and AD Jim Vaughan, who is retiring after 18 years at KHS.

McBroom said Kennett's staff and students in its school system, its facilities and resources, and “just the opportunity to work and coach at a place that loves sports” is what led him to leave his alma mater for Dunklin County.

“Over the years, I've had a good working relationship with people from Kennett and respect for their school,” McBroom said. “I have had interest in jobs there in the past. The timing and details just worked out. I'm very excited and thankful for this opportunity.”

During Vaughan's tenure as Kennett's AD, the Indians and Lady Indians sports teams became some of the most successful in Southeast Missouri, with the baseball team and girls tennis teams winning state championships, the football team making a run to the state semifinals and the boys and girls basketball teams also making deep postseason runs.

And in that vein, McBroom wants to help Kennett's other sports teams continue to be successful. He is also excited to coach the Indians, who play in the SEMO Conference against some of the state's top teams.

“I'm ready to get to work and do whatever we have to do,” McBroom said. “We want to create a culture where we are producing good young men and working to win ball games. Whatever it takes to be successful.”

Despite the new opportunity, McBroom — a 2002 graduate of Twin Rivers High School and former TRHS basketball and baseball player — will miss his alma mater.

“I loved my time at Twin Rivers,” McBroom said. “I am very grateful the opportunity to have served as their principal (10 years) and head coach (seven years). I appreciate the staff, students, and community at Twin Rivers. The competitions and big games were great, but the relationships are what it's all about. I will miss them for sure.

“To all the players and former players, thank you all for the hard work, dedication and memories.”
