JEFFERSON CITY -- Kelly's 4x800-meter relay team of Lucas Choate, Jobe Berry, C.O. Scheffer and Nathen King took first place at the Class 2A Track and Field Championships at Lincoln University Saturday.
The group ran the race in 8:16.92, almost three seconds faster than the runners-up from Berkeley.
King received the baton for his anchor leg with the Hawks in third place. He covered the final 800 meters in 1:59.6, passing Berkeley's anchor man on the final turn.
The leg was a big rebound for King. Among the favorites in the individual 800 on Friday, he faltered badly in the event.
"I told him he needed to come back today and he ran a heck of an anchor leg," said Kelly coach Bill Davis.
King, who placed sixth in the 1600 on Friday, finishes his high school career with nine all-state performances in track and cross country.
In other Class 2A action, Chaffee's Andy Obermann earned all-state honors with a throw of 47 feet, 4 1/4 inches in the shot put. He finished eighth.
Kelly's Jenny Riley broke the school record in the 1,600 with a time of 5:40.25, but finished ninth. Riley ran two seconds slower last year and finished fifth. Tabitha Shankle took 16th in the 800 at 2:36.
James Brainer of Kelly took 12th in the shot put at 42-9 and Chaffee's Andy Proffer took ninth in the high jump at 5-10.
CLASS 1A
Oran's Nathan Holmes took fourth in the 3,200 at 10:42 and fifth in the 1,600 at 4:42 as the only local athlete to crack the top eight in Class 1A.
Oran's Jared Hamm finished ninth in the discus with a throw of 121-4.
