PERRYVILLE -- Seven consecutive base hits with two outs in the top of the seventh inning propelled Kelly to an 8-3 victory over St. Vincent Wednesday.

Kelly scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. St. Vincent knotted the score with three of its own in the bottom of the sixth. Then with two outs in its half of the seventh inning the Kelly bats came alive.

John Heuring got it started with a single and came around to score what proved to be the game-winner on a one-hop double off the wall by Brad Kolwyck. The Hawks tacked on four more runs and held St. Vincent scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to even their record at 5-5.

The Hawks totaled 12 hits with Heuring going 3-for-4. Kolwyck was 2-for-3 and Jess Pattengill went 2-for-4.

Justin Simpher (2-2) gave up seven hits, fanned seven, and allowed two walks to pick up the victory.

St. Vincent, aggressive on the base paths, was thwarted by a well executed Kelly defense that threw out several potential base stealers.

"We finally got some timely hitting late in the game and our defense was outstanding," said Kelly coach Mike Scott.

BERNIE -- Unable to mount any offense until late in the game, Leopold fell to Bernie.

Ashton James led Leopold with two hits, a single and a home run for two RBIs. Lee Vandermierden had two hits also, both singles.

Leopold's record evened at 3-3.

"This is the second consecutive game that we've scored in every inning," said Chaffee coach Mark Devenport, obviously pleased with his team's offensive consistency.

An eight-team tournament hosted by Chaffee starts Friday and continues through Saturday. The Lady Red Devils meet Delta Friday afternoon in the opening round.
