CHAFFEE -- Top-seeded Kelly remained undefeated and claimed the championship of the Chaffee Tournament with a 38-27 victory over second-seeded Scott City Saturday.

The game ended up as a low-scoring defensive struggle, but began with Kelly (6-0) outscoring Scott City 15-4 in the first quarter.

The Lady Rams evened things up a bit in the second quarter, however, closing the scoring gap to 22-15 by halftime. Both teams tightened up defensively in the third quarter as they combined for just six points. Kelly took a 27-16 lead into the fourth quarter and held on for the win.

Marissa Essner was tops in scoring for the Lady Hawks, notching 12 points, and was the only player in double figures for the game.

"The kids played tremendous defense," said Kelly coach Curtis Finley. "We just had a good overall team effort. Our offense was a little rusty, but they showed a lot of improvement tonight."

Kelly travels to East Prairie for a 6:30 p.m. contest on Monday.
