KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs are "somewhat interested" in Terrell Owens, the receiver suspended in November by the Philadelphia Eagles, president and general manager Carl Peterson said Tuesday.
Peterson pointed to the track record of his new head coach, Herman Edwards, in dealing successfully with difficult players. Owens was suspended by the Eagles for the rest of the season after repeatedly criticizing the team and quarterback Donovan McNabb.
"I've always felt Herm has the ability to bridge the gap between a lot of players, whether they're black or white, whether they're offense or defense or special teams, whether they're superstars or backup players," Peterson told The Kansas City Star. "I think that's one of his strengths."
"Now, based on that, certainly I will have this conversation with him, and I'm sure there are other teams in the NFL who will do the same thing," he said. "But there are a lot of things that would go into it, and at the end of the day, we both may very well decide this is not the right path in which to try and follow."
Owens has five seasons left on the $48.97 million contract he signed in 2004, but the Eagles have given him permission to talk to other teams about a possible trade. If he's still on the Philadelphia roster March 1, he is due $7.5 million.
A team acquiring Owens would have to assume the contract or make a new deal with him.
Owens, selected for the Pro Bowl five times, started his NFL career at San Francisco in 1996. He is one of only six receivers in league history to score 100 touchdowns.
He had 77 catches for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2004 with the Eagles. He appeared in only seven games this season, with 47 catches for 763 yards and six touchdowns.
Offensive lineman Brian Waters agreed to a six-year extension of his contract with the Chiefs late last season, president Peterson said this week.
Waters, a left guard, has made the Pro Bowl the last two seasons. Peterson told The Kansas City Star that Waters, who had fired his agent about a year ago, reached the agreement on his own in November. Terms were not disclosed.
A Chiefs spokesman said Wednesday that the team planned no formal announcement.
