RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- Rain forced the Kansas City Chiefs to cancel their morning practice for the second day in a row Wednesday, but they were still busy in the front office.

While former Pro Bowl running back Priest Holmes remained at home in Texas waiting clearance from doctors, Kansas City acquired Michael Bennett from the New Orleans Saints, a one-time Pro Bowler himself who will back up Larry Johnson.

Holmes, holder of many Chiefs rushing and touchdown records, is being held out of contact by doctors because of a neck and spinal cord injury he sustained in a game last October at San Diego.

"This is not an indication that Priest is not coming back," Chiefs president Carl Peterson said.

Holmes was placed on the physically unable to perform list before the opening of training camp and will likely remain there for the foreseeable future.

Bennett, a 5-foot-9, 207-pounder, was acquired for an undisclosed choice in the 2007 draft. He was signed as a free agent with New Orleans in March, after appearing in 64 games with Minnesota. His best year was 2002 when he had 1,296 yards on 255 carries, the second-best year in Minnesota history.

He'll provide insurance behind Johnson, who emerged as a star after Holmes was injured on Oct. 30, rushing for a team-record 1,750 yards.

Peterson also said he still holds out hope that another key member of the offense -- left tackle Willie Roaf -- will change his mind and not retire.
