NEW MADRID, Mo. – New Madrid County Central’s Jadis Jones scored 43 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in a 76-63 win over rival Charleston at home Tuesday night.
The Class 3, No. 1 ranked Eagles (12-1) took advantage of numerous turnovers by the Class 3, No. 8 Blue Jays (8-7) in the first half to build a 36-25 halftime lead, with Jones scoring 18.
However, Charleston came out aggressively attacking the basket in the second half and behind the play of Tayshon Clark and Owen Willis took a two-point lead late in the third. Clark had 10 of his team-high 17 points in the quarter while Willis had nine points, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
After falling behind, NMCC came to life, pulling ahead 54-52 at the end of the third quarter.
Using a full-court press in the fourth quarter, the Eagles were able to force several Charleston turnovers that translated to easy layups and NMCC was able to cruise to victory down the stretch.
BJ Williamson, honored before the game for scoring his 1,000th point earlier in the season, scored 15 points for the Eagles while Ko’terrion Owens and Deshaun Henderson each added 12 for Charleston.
NMCC will host Cairo, Illinois (5-10), on Friday while Charleston (8-7) will try to snap a three-game losing streak at home against Scott County Central (7-7).
