Jackson wrestlers take SEMO crown

Jackson individuals won seven weight classes, and all 14 of its wrestlers placed in the top five as the Indians cruised to the SEMO Conference Tournament title on Saturday at Poplar Bluff.

Jarrett Reisenbichler (106 pounds), Kodi Byrd (113), Tyler Rush (138), Dylan Rush (145), Clayton Collier (152) Josh Stone (182) and Preston Hobeck (285) all won individual titles for the Indians, who finished with 407 team points. Reisenbichler was also named the tournament outsanding wrestler.

Placing second for Jackson were Jake Byrd (120), Jackson Rushin (160), Chris Reed (170) and Clay Darnell (220). Micah Collier was third at 126, while Ryan Baker (132) and Chris Collier (195) each placed fifth.

"We were really proud of them," said Jackson coach Steve Wachter. "We had two outstanding rounds, the semifinals and the finals. We had a great effort today. I told the kids they really battled hard and wrestled real well."

Central placed eighth with 114 points, while Notre Dame was 10th with 110.

Jackson's Kyleigh Troxel placed first in the 500 yard freestyle with a state-qualifying time of 5 minutes, 15.98 seconds in Saturday's City of Roses Invitational at the Central pool.

Troxel was also third in the 200 yard freestyle with a state-qualifying time of 2:00.63.

Troxel noted her time in the 500 was her second-best clocking this season.

"I'm kind of proud of it," the senior said. "Hopefully, I'll do a lot better at state."

Notre Dame freshman Madison Heisserer came away with two second-place finishes, both times qualifying for the state meet. She was second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:02.66) and in the 200 yard freestyle (1:59.80).

"I've been swimming (the 200) a lot lately," she said, noting she's aiming for a top-16 finish at next month's state meet.

Parkway South won the meet with 431 points. Jackson was ninth with 106. Notre Dame placed 13th with 76, Central was 14th with 51, and St. Vincent was 19th with 14.

"We had a great turnout," said Central coach Dayna Powell, whose squad hosted the meet. "More than we usually had. I think we reached our capacity."

Powell noted the pool was overflowing with swimmers and spectators alike, which made for an exciting meet.

"It's nice to have that competition come here," she said. "I think some of the other teams like to get out of town and go on a trip."

Notre Dame notched a 20-point road win over its namesake from St. Louis.

The Bulldogs (12-3) trailed 17-13 after one quarter before taking control. They outscored the host squad 28-6 over the middle two periods.

Annie Siebert led the Bulldogs with 19 points and eight rebounds. Shelby Beussink had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Kaitlin Welter grabbed seven rebounds and Karsen Powers dished out five assists.

Sophomore Brooke Moll hit one of two free throws with 13 seconds remaining, and teammate Natalie Gremaud stole the ensuing inbounds pass as Perryville hung on to win.

Free throws were the story as the Pirates (10-4) hit 12 of 20 in the game compared to just 4 of 15 for St. Vincent (6-11).

"Free throws and our lack of rebounding were definitely the difference in the game," said Perryville coach Vicki Lohmann.

Gremaud led the Pirates with 23 points and added 12 rebounds.
