Jackson wrestlers lead tourney

Jackson began defense of its SEMO Conference wrestling crown by taking the lead after the first two rounds of the two-day event, which is being hosted by Poplar Bluff.

The Indians, who have won the tournament 15 times in the previous 32 years, have a 12-point lead on Farmington, which won the 2004 title. Ste. Genevieve is third with 75.

Central is seventh among the 12 teams with 50 points.

The tournament continues today with three more rounds of wrestling before the championship round, set to begin at around 5:30 p.m.

Darnell Wilks scored 21 points to lead Central (8-7). David Deisher added 16 points and Jared Thomas scored 10.

Notre Dame exceeded its victory total of its Class 4 final four season of 2004-05 by winning on the road Friday night.

"They just wore us down," said Crusaders coach John Daniel, whose Class 1 team was bidding for its third straight win against a Class 4 school.

The Crusaders, who were 30 of 32 on free throws earlier in the week in a win at Ste. Genevieve, made just five of 24 on Friday.

Alex Ressel led the Bulldogs (15-2) with 24 points. Ryan Willen added 17 points, including two 3-pointers. Kirk Boeller and Xavier Delph each scored 12.

Saxony Lutheran (13-4) was led by Lauren Lueders, who scored 16 points with five 3-pointers. Tim Lorenz added 13 points and Casey Petzoldt scored 10.

Meadow Heights fell short at home against Class 2 district rival South Iron (13-3).

"That was the second time in three years they beat us at the buzzer at home," Meadow Heights coach Tom Brown said. "It was a great game -- high intensity, high scoring."

The Panthers (9-5), who were down by six late in overtime and had lost Anthony Bollinger to fouls, cut a late six-point deficit to three but misfired on a chance to tie.

Bollinger, Meadow Heights' leading scorer through the season, had 24 points. Heath Fulton led the Panthers with 34.

Greenville coach Robert Stein led his team to a win at home against the squad he coached last year.

Greenville limited Bluejays' leading scorer Austin Hahs to three points, while Johnnie Price erupted for 35 points for Oak Ridge.

"We really focused the last three or four days on knowing where Austin was and keeping him off the glass," Stein said. "We thought we had a plan for Johnnie, too, but he was hot."
