After losing its season opener earlier this week, the Jackson girls tennis team earned its first victory Tuesday, defeating Poplar Bluff 8-1.

Chelsea Jones, Maura Neader, Ellyn Beil, Alison Keiper and Raechel Batz all won their singles matches for the Indians. Jackson's only loss was by No. 1 Erinne Haff, who was defeated by Morgan Allen 8-3.

Haff later teamed with Beil for a 9-7 doubles victory over Allen and Dana Schuermann.

"Overall, everyone played solid," Indians coach David Brummel said. "It's good to bounce back. We're moving in the right direction."

Coming off a 14-0 regular season in 2006, the Tigers opened the fall with a sweep at Farmington.

No. 1 Sarah Ford, No. 4 Kristi Lazarova and No. 5 Brooke Morris won thier singles matches without dropping a game.

GIRLS SOFTBALLKelly 8, Chaffee 1

The Kelly softball team, coming off a state final four appearance, posted its second straight lopsided victory to begin the season.

Kelly eased past visiting Chaffee a day after opening the campaign with a 12-1 rout of East Carter County.

Lana Whitworth doubled three times to lead the Hawks' 10-hit attack against Chaffee (0-2). Ashley Flahardy added two hits, including a double.

Jessica Riley allowed four hits and one run in five innings for the victory. Heather Beggs gave up two hits in two scoreless frames.

Shelby Ancell had two of Chaffee's six hits.

The Eagles began their first fall softball season with a six-inning rout of visiting St. Vincent.

Taylor Irwin went 3-for-3 to lead the Eagles' 13-hit attack. Halie Woodfin, Ellen Sikes and Jodi Urhahn all added two hits.

Callie Kielhofner pitched a three-hitter, with two strikeouts and no walks.
