Jackson High banged out 13 hits to defeat Cape Central 6-2 in girls high school softball action Wednesday afternoon.

Jessica Sander, Melissa Palmer, Gretchen King and Carrie Myers all had two hits in the Lady Indian attack.

Jackson (5-3) scored two runs in both the third and fifth innings for a 4-0 lead. Cape Central got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the fifth, but Jackson posted another two-run inning in the seventh for a 6-1 lead. The lady Tigers scored their final run in the seventh.

King notched the victory for Jackson, giving up six hits. She walked two and struck out five.

Kelly 10, Notre Dame 0

BENTON -- Marissa Essner limited Notre Dame to five hits as the Lady Hawks posted a shutout victory.

Essner struck out five and walked one.

Jill Huber suffered the loss for Notre Dame (1-3), allowing nine hits in five innings.

Ashley Beggs, Audrey Burford and Natalie Robert each had two hits for Kelly.

Suzanne Schwartz had two hits for Notre Dame.

Tennis

Charleston 5, Jackson 4

JACKSON -- Charleston's Whitney Delay and Jodie Bledsoe won the match-deciding game in a tie-breaker in No. 3 doubles to defeat Jackson.

Delay and Bledsoe edged out Sarah Propst and Brooke Stephens 7-2 in a tie-breaker. The teams split the six singles matches while Charleston won No. 1 doubles and Jackson claimed No. 2 doubles.

Cross Country

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- Notre Dame's Susan Judd opened her sophomore season in the fast lane, claiming third place in the varsity girls race at the Murphysboro (Ill.) Invitational.

Judd, a state qualifier as a freshman, covered the 2.1-mile course in 15:37. Jean Stoverink also placed 11th in 16:23 for the Lady Bulldogs.

In the boys' 3.1-mile race, Notre Dame's Zach LeGrand was a top 20 finisher, placing 13th in 19:10.

In the JV races, Notre Dame's Laura Mitterucker placed 16th in 17:21. In JV boys, Matt Frey took 17th in 20:15 and Adam Eftink clocked 20:21 in finishing 18th.
