The Jackson Senior Babe Ruth team fell into the losers bracket at the Midwest Regional tournament Sunday, but remained alive in the double-elimination tournament in Wellington, Kan., later in the day with a victory.
Jackson, the Missouri champion, first lost 7-5 to the Colorado champion after the resumption of a rain-suspended game from Saturday night, then came back with a 12-7 victory against North Dakota.
Jackson (29-5) will face Iowa today in another elimination game. Jackson defeated the team from Ottumwa, Iowa, on Friday in its opening game.
Jackson entered Sunday's game against Colorado with a 2-0 lead in the second inning after played was halted Saturday. Brandon Bennett had provided the lead with his second home run of the regional in the first inning.
The lead was padded with a run in the fourth inning, but Colorado scored five runs in the sixth for a 5-3 lead.
Jackson tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, with Spender Sander delivering a two-out single to tie the game.
Colorado came back with two runs in the seventh for the win.
B.I. Howard was tagged with the loss in relief for Jackson. He allowed four runs and five hits in two innings. Austin Mueller pitched the first five innings.
Bennett and Trent Steffens each finished with two RBIs for Jackson, which had five hits overall.
Alex Beussink belted a grand slam and two-run triple in Jackson's win against North Dakota.
Jackson held a 6-0 lead entering the bottom of the second but saw the team from Bismarck, N.D., push across five runs.
Jackson added four runs in the top of the fourth for a 10-5 lead. Jackson then countered single runs by Bismarck in the fourth and fifth innings with single runs in the sixth and seventh.
Ross Carter had three of Jackson's 10 hits, including a three-run double. Sander and Beussink each finished with two hits.
Bennett pitched all seven innings for the win. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits.
