Jackson and Leopold are closer to returning to the B.A. Sports Volleyball Classic semifinals for the second year in a row after sweeping their matches Friday in the first day of the 40-team event.
Games resume at 8:30 a.m. today at the Show Me Center, Student Recreation Center and Notre Dame Regional High School, with the finals at 6 p.m. at the Show Me Center.
Among Friday's results:
Leopold had no trouble handling Central 25-5, 25-17 in one of the day's first games. Amber Neninnger and Mellissa Stroder each had five kills. Wendy Vandeven recorded 11 assists for Leopold (6-0).
Leopold later defeated Senath-Hornersville 25-14, 25-8. Tasha Thiele had seven kills and Neninnger had five. Lorie VanderMierden recorded three kills and five blocks. Stroder had three kills, and Wendy Vandeven added 18 assists.
Jackson defeated St. Vincent 25-11, 25-19. Linden Hahs had 10 service points and 17 digs for Jackson (4-0). Also, Jennifer Farrell had 12 digs, Jodie Gipson three aces, Shay Prister six kills and Laura Johnson seven kills and nine points. Sierra Paulus had three kills and Megan Richardet had three blocks for St. Vincent (2-1).
St. Vincent split a pair of close games with Greenville, 25-18, 21-25. Paulus recorded seven kills, and Megan Comte had 12 service points.
Jackson defeated Clarkton 25-8, 25-6. Prister had six kills, Molly Hartmann five kills, Kate Loos eight assists, Farrell nine digs and Rebecca Martin eight digs for Jackson.
Advance (4-0) disposed of Poplar Bluff 25-13, 25-10. Dana Williams and Nicole Tropf both had eight kills. Tropf had 10 aces. Williams had seven digs and Alicia Broshuis recorded eight assists.
Advance then beat Sikeston 25-11, 25-14. Williams and Tropf both had four kills. Tropf served eight aces. Broshuis had two blocks, five digs and seven assists.
Bell City (7-1) defeated Oak Ridge 25-9, 25-17 in its first game. Sophia Camara had three kills, Katie Niemczyk had 11 kills and Andreia Wondel had seven digs.
Bell City capped its night with a 25-12, 25-18 win over Scott City. Niemczyk had four kills and seven digs, Camara had seven kills and six digs, and Sarah Scherer had 10 digs.
New Salem 25-25, Southern Missouri 10-10
MacKenzie Jones had six service points, including two aces, four kills and five assists, and New Salem had no trouble at home.
Sarah Green had 11 points, including three aces, and Laura Poole had eight points, two aces and five assists. Holly Jordan and Mary Beth Poole each had four kills for New Salem (8-6-1).
FOOTBALL
Corning (Ark.) 47, Chaffee 6
Chaffee fell to 0-2 with a lopsided home loss.
Corning (2-0) did not attempt a pass all night while rushing for 375 yards and building a 41-0 halftime lead. It was 47-0 after three quarters.
The Red Devils had 123 total yards, including just 38 on the ground. Quarterback Jeff Daugherty completed four of nine passes for 85 yards. Nick Powderly caught three passes for 59 yards and rushed for 23 yards on eight carries.
Chaffee's only touchdown came late in the game when Corey Slinkard recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Cory Godwin and Clint Evans both scored twice for Corning.
SOFTBALL
Delta 9, Naylor 5
Kaci Menz was 3-for-4 and helped keep Delta unbeaten in a home win.
Ashley Elliott was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for Delta (4-0). Sarah Cook (3-0) struck out eight, walked one and gave up three hits in the win.
Kelly 4, Egyptian 1
Bethany Beggs hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to seal Kelly's victory in Tamms, Ill.
Monica Senciboy also had a double. Ashley Rockett and Stephanie Hency each had two hits. Michelle Collins (2-0) went all seven innings, struck out five and walked two for Kelly (5-3).
