Jackson High wins tennis district title

An ecstatic Jackson coach Linda Adams described it as "a great day."

The Lady Indians had just won their first district championship in Adams' seven-year career at Jackson, edging favorite Farmington 27-25 at Southeast Missouri State University Wednesday.

Adams' teams had finished second four times previously.

The Lady Indians accomplished another first by qualifying both a singles player, Nicole Poythress, and a doubles team, Carly Vogelsang and Kelly Mitchell, for the state tournament.

Poythress won singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Eureka's No. 1 seed Jessica Holzer. The doubles team finished second to Farmington.

Jackson will host the District 2 runnerup in sectionals on Oct. 13.

Cape Central, down a little after a run of district championships, surprised with a third-place finish.

Sophomores Allie McGinty and Erika Foley, the Lady Tigers' No. 2 doubles team, placed third.

MEADOW HEIGHTS 15-15

STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- Meadow Heights got at least four kills from three different players as the Lady Panthers improved to 19-3.

Holly Boyd posted a team-high 10 kills, followed by Ashley Brune with seven and Hanna James with four.

Brune led the Lady Panthers with 17 digs, followed by James (15), Boyd (12) and Rachel Welker (8).

Stoddard County Tournament

ESSEX, Mo. -- Sixth-seed Woodland dropped its first-round match to third-seed Bernie 15-6, 15-5.

Kelly Reed led the Lady Cardinals with three kills, while Jeni Jackson had two. Emily Davis scored seven points with three aces.

Notre Dame Freshman/JV Tournament

Jackson defeated host Notre Dame (19-2) in three sets 15-10, 8-15, 15-10 to win the JV division of the eight-team tournament.

Notre Dame's undefeated freshmen team turned the tables on the Lady Indians in straight sets 15-8, 16-14 to capture the title in its division. The Lady Bulldog freshmen improved to 13-0.

SOFTBALL

FARMINGTON 15, SIKESTON 0

JACKSON, Mo. -- Fourth-seed Farmington exploded for 11 runs in the third inning to sink Sikeston 15-0 in the opener of the Class 4A, District 1 playoffs.

No. 5 Sikeston's early exit was brief as the three inning, 15-run mercy rule was in effect. Farmington had already scored one in the first and three in the second.

The Knightettes rapped eight base hits, but also benefited from eight walks issued by losing pitcher Jessica Owen.

Marcy Dotson and Erin Sales led the Farmington offense with two hits each. Both of Dotson's hits were doubles.

Andrea Brewer picked up the win as she allowed only one hit with two walks and no strikeouts.

Top-seed Cape Central will meet Farmington today at 6 p.m.

In the other semifinal, No. 3 Jackson and No. 2 Poplar Bluff tangle at 4 p.m.

8th GRADE FOOTBALL

CENTRAL SWEEPS NMCC

Cape Central's 'A' and 'B' teams knocked off New Madrid County Central.

The 'A' team (1-1-1) won 35-8, while the 'B' team (1-0) won 12-0.

Kingsley Ehie scored four touchdowns and a two-point conversion in the first game, while Lance Altenthal scored a touchdown and kicked an extra point.

Brock Seabaugh and Anthony Hempstead both scored touchdowns in the 'B' game.
