Jackson freshman Tanner Werner was tied for the lead after the first round of the Class 4 state golf meet Monday at Island Green in Republic.

Werner fired a 1-under par 71 to place himself in a tie for first with Springfield Kickapoo junior Dillon Maloney.

Werner started on the back nine and shot an even-par 36. Werner covered the front side in 1-under par 35. Werner finished with four birdies and three bogeys.

Springfield Central's Kevin King and Kansas City Rockhurst's Matt Ledom were a shot back. Three other players were within three shots.

In Class 3 at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Notre Dame's Brett Slaten shot an 81 and was tied at 29th. The Bulldogs' John Oliver shot 95 and was tied for 118th.

In Class 1 at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar, Saxony Lutheran's Zach Vaeth shot a 12-over par 84. Vaeth is tied for 18th place.
