Perhaps nobody was happier when Linden Hahs joined Southeast Missouri State University's volleyball program this year than Jessica Koeper.
That's because Koeper was reunited with good friend and fellow Jackson native Hahs.
"She's been my best friend on and off the court, and when I heard she was coming here I was really happy," said Koeper, a sophomore. "I'm glad to have her."
And likewise, freshman Hahs is pleased to be back with Koeper, who Hahs credits with basically showing her the ropes when both were at Jackson High School.
"She was like my big sister. She would take care of me," Hahs said. "We've been friends for a while."
As the Otahkians prepare to begin their season Wednesday night at home against Southwest Missouri State, coach Cindy Gannon is elated to have the Jackson connection on her roster.
"It's great what they've brought to the program, the way their families have gotten involved," Gannon said. "And it helps that they're good players."
Koeper made her mark with the Otahkians during her freshman season last year, starting for much of the early part of the campaign and then coming off the bench late. She admits to a nerve-wracking rookie season but expects much smoother sailing this year.
"For a freshman I feel like I did pretty good, but last year was just nerves," Koeper said, smiling. "This year I feel a lot more comfortable."
Hahs, who starred for Jackson's Indians last year after Koeper was a standout the year before, is being tried at the defensive libero position. She doesn't know how much playing time she'll receive but is simply happy to be competing on the collegiate level.
"I'm really excited and glad to be with all these girls," Hahs said. "If I get a chance, I'll do my best."
Last year, Koeper also had a fellow Jackson product on the team in older sister Andrea. But Andrea Koeper, a former Southeast basketball player, decided to get back into that sport and is now competing for Division II Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
"She liked basketball better than volleyball," Jessica said.
But with Hahs on board, there are still two Jackson natives playing for the Otahkians -- much to Koeper's delight.
"It's great she's here," Koeper said.
