In his first season as head coach, Sam Sides put an emphasis on team play while leading Jackson to a 23-win season and a district runner-up finish.
The Indians played every player on their varsity roster, using their depth to wear teams down. With the loss of six seniors, including four starters, Sides hopes this year's squad basically will be a younger version of last year's.
"I think we can be as competitive and balanced as last year," Sides said.
The Indians did not rely on one scoring threat last season -- Ashley Bartels led the team with a 13.8-point average -- but the graduation of four starters took much of the Jackson offense, including Bartels. For Jackson to be successful again, its 10 varsity players will all have to play their parts.
"I expect everyone to contribute as they can," Sides said.
The player likely to grab the most attention from opponents is junior Bobbie Jones, the team's lone returning starter. Jones, a 5-foot-10 forward, provided steady scoring for the Indians last season.
"She's worked a lot this summer," Sides said. "She's a better shooter all-around."
Several role players from last year will get their chance to start this season. Kelly Loos, a 5-3 senior, will take over the point guard duties from departed sister Katie, while 5-9 junior forward Kylie Werner and 5-10 junior forward Loni Littlepage could join Jones up front.
"It's nice to have some kids back from the year before," Sides said.
Rounding out the starting five likely could be 5-10 center Amanda Peiffer. Peiffer is the tallest player on the team and brings an athletic presence to the post.
"She runs real well for her height," Sides said. "She's pretty quick for her size."
Under Sides' philosophy, the players coming off the bench will be equally important to Jackson's success. This year's bench is young and untested.
Sides said his team may not have that one star player, but he feels his team has quality depth.
"If we can get our bench against their bench we'll have an advantage," he said.
Guard Andrea Puisis brings a name familiar to Jackson basketball fans. She is the younger sister of Jack Puisis, a star for the boys team.
"She's improved as much as anybody in a two-year period," Sides said. "She has put the time in. She's been in the gym a lot."
Jackson will see some new teams this year by starting the season Friday at the Zizzer Classic in West Plains.
