Jackson's girls cross country team showed it will have some senior leadership this year as the Indians finished 1-2-3 in the senior division race at the Jackson Invitational on Saturday at Jackson City Park.

Megan Barnum won the girls' 2.35-mile race in 15 minutes, 1 second to finish 58 seconds ahead of teammate Courtney Hahs, while Ana Compton placed third in 16:05. The Indians accumulated the lowest possible score with six points as the top three finishers' places made up the team total.

All three Indians are returning state qualifiers from last year's team that placed fourth at the state meet.

"I think we're really going to gel well by the end of the season," Jackson coach Andrea Talley said. "Right now we're finding our way."

The Indians also featured a 1-2 finish in placing first in the sophomore race, with Kaylee Wilson, also a state returner, winning in 15:54 and Faith Littleton taking second.

"I think for the first meet they did pretty well," Talley said. "For the first meet we just wanted it to be just solid. This isn't the end of the season, we're just getting started. We're just beginning in our work and entering our second phase of training and we haven't done a lot of speed work yet."

Talley said the Indians have had to work within the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) guidelines regarding heat, which has restricted training.

"We knew we weren't super race sharp, but I think just getting our training in however we could during this weather," she said. "I think we did well for where we are and the training that we had," Talley said.

The Indians also took fifth in the girls junior race and second in the 1.95-mile freshmen race.

Kirkwood dominated on the boys' side, where the top four indvidual scores counted, winning the team titles in all but the senior race, where it finished second to Farmington.

Jackson placed fifth in the senior and junior boys races, and second in the sophomore and freshman races.

St. Vincent also had a strong showing among the boys, taking fourth in the junior division and third in the sophomore division. The Indians also placed fourth in the girls' junior race.

Cape Girardeau Central placed fourth in the boys freshman race and fifth in the girls sophomore race.
