Indians rally from 7-0 deficit to stun Yankees

CLEVELAND -- Bill Selby's grand slam capped Cleveland's six-run ninth inning against Mariano Rivera as the Indians rallied from seven runs down to stun the New York Yankees 10-7 Sunday.

Trailing 7-0 after four innings, the Indians cut it to a three-run game heading into the ninth against Rivera (1-4), who blew his second save of the series after converting 17 straight chances.

Selby nearly won it with a drive down the right-field line that was foul by less than a foot. On the next pitch, Selby connected for a drive over the right-field fence for his first homer of the season.

It was the worst relief outing in Rivera's career, surpassing the five runs he allowed against Baltimore on May 13, 2001.

Ricardo Rincon (1-3) pitched 1 2-3 innings for the win as the Indians gained a split of the four-game series.

Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 5

TORONTO -- Eric Hinske hit a game-winning homer in the ninth after connecting for a tiebreaking home run in the seventh as Toronto beat Boston for the third straight time.

Hinske homered off Tim Wakefield in the seventh, and hit his 16th homer on closer Ugueth Urbina's (0-4) first pitch in the ninth.

Down 5-3 in the top of the ninth, Boston's Trot Nixon tied it with a two-run shot off closer Kelvim Escobar (5-4).

The Blue Jays, who took three of four from Boston, had lost 11 consecutive games to the Red Sox before winning Friday night.

Mariners 7, Devil Rays 6

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Ruben Sierra hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning to lead Seattle past Tampa Bay.

Bret Boone also hit a solo homer for the Mariners, who gave right-hander Freddy Garcia an early five-run lead that the All-Star pitcher couldn't protect.

Left-hander Mark Watson (1-0) got two outs for his first career victory. Kazuhiro Sasaki worked the ninth for his 23rd save in 27 opportunities.

Sierra led off the eighth with a first-pitch homer, his 12th of the season, off Travis Phelps (0-1).

Orioles 6, Athletics 3

BALTIMORE -- Jay Gibbons hit two home runs and had a career-high five RBIs as Baltimore ended its scoring drought to avert a four-game sweep.

Gibbons hit a two-run drive in the third inning and put Baltimore up 6-3 with a three-run shot in the fifth. He has 16 homers, one more than he hit as a rookie last year in a season shortened by a wrist injury.

After scoring only one run in the first three games of the series, the Orioles feasted on Oakland starter Cory Lidle (2-8), who yielded six runs in 5 1-3 innings.

Rodrigo Lopez (9-3) allowed three runs, seven hits and two walks in seven innings.

Royals 12, Angels 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Raul Ibanez hit a grand slam in the first inning and a three-run shot in the second to tie the club record with seven RBIs to lead Kansas City past Anaheim 12-3.

Breaking an 0-for-9 skid, Ibanez hit a 3-2 pitch off Ramon Ortiz (8-7) for his second career grand slam. Ortiz has allowed 28 home runs -- the most in the majors this season.

Miguel Asencio (2-2) went six innings for the win. He gave up nine hits and two runs on RBI singles by Troy Glaus and Brad Fullmer.

White Sox 6, Tigers 4

DETROIT -- Carlos Lee went 4-for-5 with two homers and Chicago took advantage of a pair of throwing errors to snap a three-game slide.

Lee hit solo shots in the third and fifth innings off Adam Bernero (2-5) to give the White Sox a 3-1 lead. His third multihomer game this season gave him 15 homers.

Jon Garland (8-6) allowed four runs on eight hits over seven innings. Damaso Marte worked the eighth, and Antonio Osuna pitched the ninth for his fifth save in seven opportunities.

Twins 5, Rangers 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- David Ortiz and Torii Hunter homered in the bottom of the eighth inning as Minnesota overcame two home runs by Alex Rodriguez to beat Texas.

Trailing 4-3, Hunter led off the eighth with a shot to right-center off Colby Lewis (1-2). Then Ortiz hit his homer to straight away center, giving the Twins the lead for good.

The rally came a half-inning after Rodriguez, who homered for the third straight game, hit a two-run shot off reliever Mike Jackson.

J.C. Romero (5-1) pitched 1-3 innings for the win. Eddie Guardado worked the ninth for his 28th save in 32 opportunities.
