Southeast Missouri State University football coach John Mumford will be looking for execution on both sides of the ball today when the Indians conclude spring workouts with a controlled scrimmage at Houck Stadium.
Action is scheduled to get under way at 1 p.m. The scrimmage, which will pit the number one offense vs. the number one defense and the number two units against each other, is open to the public at no charge.
"This will give us an opportunity to see how far we've progressed during spring drills," said Mumford. "We will be checking how well we execute our offense and defense and how our players execute fundamentals of the game."
Today's competition will mark the culmination of 15 spring practice sessions allowed under NCAA guidelines. Mumford said that, overall, he has been pleased with what he's seen.
"I feel we have shown improvement and we have found that our young players are coachable and they have improved," Mumford said. "We've used a lot of players in different positions and we've put in some new things in on both offense and defense.
"The scrimmage will be our report card."
There will be no kicking or punting in the scrimmage that will last for about 1 1/2 hours.
Fall practice will begin in August. The 1999 season kicks off Sept. 2 when Southern Illinois comes to Houck Stadium for a Thursday night contest.
