Alex Winkler rushed for 211 yards on 29 carries and scored five touchdowns as host St. Vincent won its second straight game, defeating Lift for Life Academy 35-16 in high school football action Friday night.
St. Vincent (3-2) led 14-8 at halftime before Winkler, a senior running back, scored twice in the third period to put the Indians up 28-8 heading into the final period.
"He's been our workhorse all season long," St. Vincent head coach Paul Sauer said. "Our offensive line did a great job blocking for him."
Sophomore quarterback Joe Whistler completed 4 of 11 passes for 77 yards for the Indians.
"We finally got our offense going," Sauer said. "We got great field position and we were able to take advantage of that."
Zach Elder threw for one touchdown and Jonny Pruiett returned a kickoff for another score, but it wasn't enough as the Pirates lost on the road.
"We missed two or three scoring opportunities," said Perryville coach Mike Wojtczuk as his squad fell to 2-3 on the season. "We moved the ball into the red zone but then kind of shot ourselves in the foot a bit."
The Pirates had a couple drives end with turnovers or penalties that pushed them out of scoring position.
"We've got to keep working at it and get that stuff cleaned up," Wojtczuk said.
