The St. Vincent football team opened a one-point lead on visiting Park Hills during Friday's game, but the Rebels answered with 16 fourth-quarter points to pull out the 28-13 victory.

Indians senior quarterback Tim Schumer, who made his first start since injuring his knee during Week 3 last season, tossed a 17-yard pass to Trent Elder for the 13-12 lead.

Schumer accounted for his team's first touchdown when he ran in from 3 yards out.

The Indians travel to Scott City in Week 2.

Herculaneum 27, Perryville 8

The Pirates lost their season opener at home.

Wyatt McAfee scored on a 1-yard run for the Pirates' lone touchdown, which came in the second quarter.

McAfee had 13 carries for 46 yards and added 14 yards on two catches.

Jonny Pruiett had two carries for 39 yards, while Kirk Hadler recorded 20 yards on 11 carries.

Levi Zook had 11 carries for 50 yards, helping the Pirates rush for 175 yards.

Chris Zahner was 5 of 13 passing for 49 yards.

Cody Call added three catches for 35 yards.

The game was scoreless after the first quarter, but Herculaneum went ahead 13-8 at the intermission.

Perryville will play at De Soto in Week 2.

Malden 47, Scott City 21

The Green Wave defeated the Rams for the third straight year to begin the season.

Malden got behind early in the first half but capitalized on mistakes.

Malden (1-0) got touchdown returns on defense by two freshmen -- Javiel Cooper returned a fumble 75 yards in the second quarter and Cortez Dobbins scored on an 86-yard interception in the fourth quarter. Senior Jonsha Robinson also returned a fumble for a score in the first quarter.

Malden junior Romello McCoy scored two touchdowns, including a 74-yard run on the first drive of the game for the Green Wave. He also ran one in from 14 yards out in the fourth quarter. He finished with 16 carries for 195 yards.

"We started out not so good," Scott City coach Jim May said. "We gave up 20 points in the first quarter."

Malden junior quarterback Tanner Murphy threw for one touchdown, an 18-yard pass to Robinson, and also ran one in from 3 yards out.

Scott City's Jonathan McFall threw two touchdown passes to Zach Cotner, an 11-yarder and a 14-yarder.

"We moved the ball pretty effectively then got to chasing points," May said.

Forrest Copeland returned a fumble for a score in the third quarter for the Rams.

Sydney Rapp went 2 for 2, including a double, while Amber Schwettman scored the Crusaders' lone run in their road loss.

Ashley Steck walked four and struck out two for Saxony Lutheran.

Abby Hadler and Harper Johnson both finished with one hit in the loss.

The Crusaders return to action Wednesday when they travel to Perryville.
