Josh Haggerty and Chase Urhahn each hit a double to pace the Bulldogs as the Notre Dame baseball team suffered its first loss of the season to three-time defending state champion Westminster Christian Academy 8-4 on Saturday in the suburban St. Louis area in a battle of the two top-ranked teams in the state in Class 4.
Westminster, currently ranked first, was led by Caleb Hicks, who doubled. The Wildcats were led on the mound by Jordan Smith, whose pitching helped Wesminster improve to 14-3.
"We actually had a chance to take the lead in the fifth inning, but we didn't do it," Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett said.
Ross James endured his first loss on the mound for the Bulldogs. He pitched a complete game and recorded six strikeouts and four walks.
"Too many mistakes, but all in all, I'm pretty happy with the way we competed today," Graviett said.
Westminster defeated Notre Dame 7-5 in the state quarterfinals last year.
Later in the day, the Bulldogs trumped O'Fallon Christian 17-2 in five innings to notch their 10th win of the season.
Haggerty blasted a triple and a double to lead Notre Dame in the win.
Pitcher Graham Ruopp picked up his fourth win on the mound. He threw a complete game and had six strikeouts and five walks.

A run scored by the Green Wave in the bottom of the 10th inning allowed host Malden to break the tie and come away with the win over the Rams.
Garrett Potts and Brandon Stanley each hit a double to help lead Malden to victory.

Home runs by Portageville's Derrick Priggel, Hunter Jackson and Chance Howard helped the Bulldogs rout the Rams at Malden.
