Malden senior Nick Thompson rushed for a 59-yard touchdown on the third play of the game, four other players got into the end zone in the first half and the Malden football team finished with 274 total yards in a convincing 51-8 victory Friday over Scott City at William Wilthong Field.
With the win, Malden (4-0, 2-0 SEMO South) moved into sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
Scott City, meanwhile, fell to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the SEMO South while being held to just 64 yards and four first downs.
"We didn't come out ready to play. We didn't have a good week of practice," Scott City coach Jim May said. "I don't know if we were intimidated by them, but there were points where I thought we just kind of laid down in the first half."
The Rams moved the ball across midfield just once in the first half but the drive ended in a turnover on downs.
Both teams went three and out on the next two drives of the game before Trey Stevenson intercepted Scott City quarterback Ty Wilthong's third pass of the game and returned it 30 yards to the end zone to extend the lead to 16-0 at the four-minute mark.
Scott City saw little success in the second half and finished with four rushing yards.
Wilthong scored the Rams' lone touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run with 9:50 to play and completed 6 passes for 34 yards in the loss.
"They just came out and man-handled us up front and when you get man handled up front there's not much you can do about it," May said. "Running or passing, we couldn't get either of them going."
The Rams return to action this week on the road against Chaffee.
The Indians held the host Blackcats scoreless for the final three quarters and cruised to their second straight win of the season.
"After watching film, Herculaneum came out with a new running back that we did not have film on, and he was very shifty and a lot different than the running backs we scouted and practiced going into the game against," St. Vincent coach Nathan Rowland said. "It took our defense a quarter to get used to his style and kind of keep him contained, whereas our previous gameplan going into it was to try to keep them from going up the middle with their bigger backs."
Riley Riehn had over 100 rushing yards to lead St. Vincent (2-2, 1-1 I-55 Conference), which finished the game with three turnovers. Indians quarterback Joe Whistler ran for a pair of 1-yard scores and had two passing touchdowns in the first half, including a pass to Trevor Lieble with less than a minute remaining before halftime. St. Vincent led 14-12 at the break.
"[Whistler] had a pretty big night, but I'd say our biggest contributor was Riley Riehn on the ground," Rowland said. "He got us in all those situations by taking it to the goal line, and then once we were down there, we don't even turn and hand the ball off. We just move forward with our big quarterback."
The Indians will take on host Freeburg, Illinois, this week.
Devon Nanney had two rushing touchdowns, a receiving touchdown and a pair of two-point conversions to lead the Red Devils to a road win over the Pilots.
"It's always tough to come out of the state and win a game on the road," said Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery, whose team ended a streak of eight straight road losses dating back to 2013. "I was really glad to see our players come back because we didn't play very well in the second half defensively, and we allowed them to tie it up. ... We're 2-2 right now, and I feel like at a minimum, that's where we need to be."
Chaffee (2-2) led 20-7 at halftime but allowed the Pilots to tie the game at 26-26 inside the final four minutes of the game, but an 18-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Landon Tenkhoff to Nanney gave the Red Devils the lead with 29 seconds remaining in the game.
Vickery said the senior Nanney continues to contribute big plays for Chaffee.
"He's a tough kid. He can catch the ball," Vickery said. "... He runs the ball extremely hard, and he did a lot of good things for us."
Vickery was also pleased with the performance of Tenkhoff, who finished with a pair of rushing touchdowns.
"He had a really good night," Vickery said. "He threw the ball extremely well. I dont think he had but maybe three incompletions the entire night. He had some positive rushing yards, directed the offense extremely well.
"He gets better every time out."
Ira Holcomb netted two goals to lead the Bulldogs in the win at home over the Warriors.
Wyn Roberds scored the other goal for Notre Dame (3-4). Blake Bauwens provided two assists, and Grayson Mueller had one assist for the Bulldogs.
Goalkeeper Noah Santana had four saves.
Ryan Ashmore and Owen Smith each had one goal, and Isaac Butler dished out one assist for Whitfield (1-6).
