Jackson at Parkway North
* Last year: did not meet
* Notes: The Indians struggled offensively in their season opener, but Jackson took advantage of key turnovers and a game-winning punt block recovery to open with a home win. Josh Wheeler led Jackson's running attack with 37 yards, although the Indians did start to eat up clock and move the line late in the game when it counted. Wheeler also scored on a 56-yard screen pass. Jackson's defense held Howell Central to 38 yards rushing in the second half after giving up more than 100 yards in the opening half. Parkway North rushed for 285 yards in its win over Central, led by Mike Bunton's 106. Jacob McKinley added 95 yards on the ground, and Chuck Gray rushed for 73 yards.
New Madrid County Central at Central
* Last week: Parkway North 29, Central 7; NMCC 43, St. Pius 13
* Last year: did not meet
* Notes: Central was forced to throw after falling behind in its season opener, leading to more than 200 yards passing from quarterbacks Blake Slattery and Garrett Stevens. Hykeem Hammonds had just 10 carries for 49 yards. Sophomore receiver George Hamilton had 98 yards receiving, including a 77-yard touchdown catch from Stevens. New Madrid County's main weapon is junior quarterback Leslie Williams, who rushed for three touchdowns and threw for one in New Madrid's lopsided win over Class 2 Festus St. Pius. The Eagles upset the Tigers at Houck Stadium 26-20 in overtime the last time the teams met in 2003.
Scott City at Portageville
* Last week: Malden 33, Scott City 14; Piggott (Ark.) 35, Portageville 7
* Last year: Portageville 19, Scott City 16
* Notes: Scott City's defense allowed three Malden runners to surpass 100 yards in a blowout loss. Ethan Watkins passed for 136 yards for Scott City but threw two interceptions. Cody Carlyle led the Rams with 65 yards rushing. Portageville will likely run the ball after losing its starting quarterback to an injury in the jamboree. Aaron Kershaw led the Bulldogs with 78 yards rushing in their lopsided season-opening loss, and quarterback Cody Cook threw for 24 yards in his debut.
Liberty Mountain View at Chaffee
* Last week: Chaffee 43, Grandview 14; Liberty Moutain View 33, Logan-Rogersville 14
* Last year: did not meet
* Notes: Chaffee ended its 34-game losing streak in resounding fashion, putting up its highest point total since scoring 46 in a win against Gosnell (Ark.) in 1994. The Red Devils now try to do something they haven't since 1992: win back-to-back games. The running game helped lead the Red Devils, as Chaffee amassed 291 yards on the ground. Kent Courtney and Andrew Hendrix combined for 181 yards. Liberty Mountain View is coming off a similarly convincing win. Liberty went 4-6 last season after a cumulative 3-16 mark the previous two years. Justin French threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns in Liberty's Week 1 win, and Cody Honeycutt had 116 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
St. Vincent at Park Hills Central
* Last week: McAuley Catholic 14, St. Vincent 10; Valle 15, Park Hills 7
* Last year: St. Vincent 21, Park Hills Central 14
* Notes: St. Vincent lost its season opener for the second straight season. Last year, the Indians beat Park Hills in Week 2 and went on to win six of their next seven games. The Rebels last week could not take advantage of three Valle turnovers and allowed the Warriors to gain 245 yards on the ground. Aaron Bates led the Rebels' offense with 84 yards receiving on seven catches.
De Soto at Perryville
* Last week: Perryville 21, Pacific 7; Windsor 20, De Soto 0
* Last year: did not meet
* Notes: Kris Cottner got off to a hot start at lead tailback for the Pirates with 158 yards rushing in Perryville's opening win. Ryan Schilling also ran for two scores and threw for 140 yards. Tyler Bauwens was the main target with five catches for 81 yards. Perryville's defense limited Pacific, which hasn't won a game on the field since the 2002 opener, to 73 yards of offense. De Soto turned the ball over three times in its surprising opening loss to a team picked by coaches to finish last in the MAFC large-schools division.
