High school football capsules for Week 6

East Prairie (3-2) at Chaffee (2-3)

Outlook: East Prairie has won the last two meetings by a combined 101-8 and has defeated the Red Devils six of the last seven times. Chaffee's last win over the Eagles was a 28-14 victory in 2007.

After 11 straight losses, the Red Devils now own back-to-back victories. Chaffee posted an emotional victory over rival Scott City last week.

"We've had a good week of practice so I don't think there's any way we come in there and not play hard," Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery said. "They're an excellent team."

East Prairie saw its three-game winning streak end with a lopsided loss to Mountain View Liberty last week.

The Eagles feature senior running backs Aaron Miller and Zach Shipman in their Wing-T offense.

"They just come at you and block well," Vickery said. "They run hard and execute really well."

Chaffee had one of its better games running the football last week with 166 yards on 50 carries. The total would have topped 200 yards if not for a 35-yard sack of junior quarterback Jordan Yahn, who did rush for three touchdowns. Junior Tyson Estes led the way with 19 carries for 74 yards and senior Cody Enderle added four carries for 41 yards.

East Prairie has shown the ability to stuff the run. The Eagles also own a win against Scott City, limiting the Rams to 80 yards and their star running back Garett Schaefer to 39 yards. Schaefer had topped 200 yards in his two previous games before running into the Eagles.

Chaffee's two victories have coincided with Yahn returning to the lineup after a sprained ankle in the season opener.

"The key is getting better, and the last three weeks we've gotten better," Vickery said. "We've just got to continue to do so."

Chaffee junior linebacker/fullback Trevor Cannon is questionable with a bruised shoulder.

St. Charles West (3-2) at Central (5-0)

Last week: St. Charles West 28, Duchesne 6; Central 51, North County 14

Last year: Did not play

Outlook: The teams have not met the last two seasons after meeting four straight years from 2004 to 2007. St. Charles West won three of the meetings, with Central's lone victory a 34-10 triumph in 2006.

The Warriors have beaten winless opponents -- St. Charles and Duchesne -- the last two weeks. Their three victories have come against teams with a combined 1-14 record. They have faced two teams with winning records -- Fort Zumwalt East and Washington -- and lost to both.

Senior quarterback Anthony Richardson has completed nearly 61 percent of his passes and is the team's leading rusher. He has thrown for 663 yards and six touchdowns, while rushing for 326 yards (5.9 yards per attempt) in the option attack.

"We'll have a challenge defensively to make sure we have our assignments together," Central coach Rich Payne said. "If you break down on one assignment, you're going to get burned."

Senior fullback Tony Treadway is the second-leading rusher with 233 yards (5.1 ypa).

Richardson has three main targets in seniors Shane Huddleston and Aaron Burke and junior Tyler Hanneke. Burke leads the team with 15 receptions but only has half the yardage of Huddleston, who has 14 catches for a team-high 221 yards.

Central, which debuted at No. 9 in the Class 4 state poll this week, can move to 6-0 for the first time since 1972. Central was 10-0 during the 1972 regular season and finished at 10-1.

"It's nice, it shows our accomplishments to this point," Payne said of the ranking. "But that doesn't mean a hill of beans at the end of the day. What matters is that you're a ranked team somewhere in there at the end of the year."

The Tigers' ranking is on the heels of an 0-10 season.

"It's a compliment to our kids," Payne said. "They've continued to work hard and have got to that point. But they're still not satisfied with that."

The Tigers have been unstoppable on the ground this year, averaging 332 yards rushing.

Central rushed for a season-high 410 yards against winless North County. Fourteen Tigers carried the ball, led by seniors James Poindexter and Keilon Moore, who both average 10 yards per attempt this season. Poindexter has a team-high 496 yards rushing and Moore has 490.

Junior quarterback Christian Cavaness has completed at least 50 percent of his passes in four of Central's five games. He has completed 23 of 35 passes (65.7 percent) for 373 yards and six touchdowns.

Perryville (0-5) at Maplewood (5-0)

Last week: Fredericktown 34, Perryville 9; Maplewood 41, Park Hills Central 6

Last year: Did not play

Outlook: The teams have not met in recent history but now reside in the same conference -- MAFC White Division.

Perryville faces its second straight unbeaten and state-ranked opponent. Maplewood is ranked No. 1 in Class 2 and has not had a game closer than 10 points.

The Blue Devils have a balanced attack, led by sophomore quarterback Kahlid Hagens, who has completed 60 percent of his passes. Hagens has passed for 669 yards.

Senior running backs Terron Dale and Austyn Ford lead the running attack. Dale has run for a team-high 321 yards, while Ford has 254 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns.

Senior Cortez Cooper is Hagens' primary target with a team-high 13 catches for 201 yards.

Perryville has lost seven in a row and 16 of its last 17 games.

The Pirates trailed Fredericktown 28-0 at halftime in last week's loss. Perryville is averaging 10.4 points a game and allowing 40.2.

Scott City (1-4) at Portageville (2-3)

Last week: Chaffee 27, Scott City 13; Kennett 19, Portageville 18

Last year: Portageville 35, Scott City 0

Outlook: Portageville broke a 32-game losing streak with its victory against Scott City last season. The Rams had won the previous three meetings against the Bulldogs.

Portageville is in its first season under former Scott City coach Ronnie Jones, who led the Rams in 2007 and 2008.

Portageville owns a 42-6 victory against Chaffee, which beat Scott City by 14 points last week. The Bulldogs, who also have a win against winless Charleston, have lost their last two games. The Bulldogs' one-point loss to Kennett last week fell in the hard-to-swallow category. Kennett scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning touchdown with 45 seconds left.

Senior quarterback Caden Robbins leads the Portageville attack. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Robbins accounted for four touchdowns -- two passing and two running -- against Scott City last year. The Bulldogs had more than 300 yards offense before halftime in that game with Robbins passing for 217 yards before the break.

"They're an athletic team and they're an aggressive, attacking style team," Scott City coach Jim May said.

Fred Treadwell has been Portageville's top rusher this season, topping 100 yards several times.

Scott City has swooned since its lone victory in Week 2 against St. Vincent. The Rams have encountered consecutive losses to East Prairie, Dexter and Chaffee.

The Rams mounted 310 yards of offense in last week's loss to the Red Devils but committed four turnovers and 10 penalties for 95 yards.

"We've just got to stop making mistakes," May said. "We just keep making penalties and turning the football over. And for us to be successful, we cannot do that. We work every day to get better at it. We haven't seen the results we'd like yet, but hopefully they're coming.

"We've got to put the first half of the season behind us and hopefully learn from it. But the last three weeks have not been good, and we're going to try to get better."

Scott City senior Garett Schaefer had his fourth 100-yard rushing game this season with 131 yards against Chaffee. Schaefer leads the area with 753 yards (6.5 ypa).

Rams senior linebacker Wade Keesee, one of the team's leading tacklers, suffered a concussion during the second half of the Chaffee game and will not play tonight.

SATURDAY

Jackson (2-3) at Vashon (1-4)

Last week: Sikeston 49, Jackson 18; Roosevelt 32, Vashon 19

Last year: Did not play

Outlook: The teams have not met since Jackson swept a two-year series in 1996 and 1997, the only times the schools have crossed paths on a football field. The Indians won the last meeting 37-0.

Vashon has lost four straight since posting a 54-12 victory over Poplar Bluff in its season opener. The losses have come against opponents with a combined 17-4 record.

"This is one of the more disciplined Vashon teams that I've seen," Jackson coach Van Hitt said. "They're a well-coached high school football team."

Six-foot-three senior Darren Fowlkes directs the Wolverines' spread offense. He is a threat to both run and pass. Fowlkes was Vashon's leading rusher in last week's loss to Roosevelt. He also passed for a season-high 343 yards and five touchdowns against Poplar Bluff. He completed 13 of 21 passes against the Mules.

The Wolverines use a variety of running backs, including seniors Tyler Lomax, Courtney Curry and Kinnes Jackson.

Marvin Curry had five catches for 153 yards and Jackson had four receptions for 104 yards in the win against Poplar Bluff. Provine Robbins, a 5-4 senior, had four catches for 91 yards.

"Right now I'm more concerned about us than our opponents," Hitt said.

Jackson has lost two straight to SEMO North state-ranked teams Central and Sikeston. The Indians trailed Sikeston 29-18 at halftime before being outscored 21-0 in the second half.

"We showed signs on offense and defense that we can play, but we've got to get more consistent with it," Hitt said. "You can't go out one time on defense and force the opponents to three downs and a punt, and the next time give them two long runs and score.

"We lose our focus on the field. We need to get out there and get our job done on every play and every snap for an entire ballgame."

Senior running back Ethan Ruch had 99 of the Indians' 119 yards rushing last week and has a team-high 467 yards on the season.

Jackson junior linebacker Brandon Wills will miss his second straight game with a bruised shoulder, while junior offensive/defensive lineman Jake Jones is out with a broken hand. Junior defensive end Kyle Fields is questionable after suffering a concussion against Central in Week 4.
