Some of the area's future track and field talent will be on display today when the annual Hershey Track and Field Youth Meet takes place at Central Junior High School.
The meet is for girls and boys ages 9 to 14. The kids are divided into three age groups (9-10, 11-12 and 13-14), with the winner of each age group automatically qualifying for the state meet in Jefferson City.
"Some of these kids that are really talented, it gives them a chance to showcase their talents," Parks and Recreation Department recreation coordinator Amy Roth said.
The meet, which will start at 9 a.m. with the 50-meter dash, typically attracts about 30 to 35 participants. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
Other events include long jump, softball throw, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400- meter dash, 800-meter dash, 1,600-meter run and the 400-meter relay. Athletes can participate in up to three events.
"It's definitely a good opportunity for kids to decide whether track and field is for them," Roth said.
Athletes that make it to the state meet can ultimately qualify for the national meet in Hershey, Pa., on Aug. 5-8.
Roth said all participants will receive a ribbon.
