Hayti scored a touchdown with 16 seconds remaining to avoid an upset bid by St. Vincent and post a 7-6 victory in Friday night's Class 1, District 1 football opener in Perryville.

St. Vincent (5-3)led 6-0, getting Kyle Kline field goals of 30 yards in the first quarter and 32 yards in the fourth quarter.

Hayti (6-1)began its final drive from around its 30-yard line with just over two minutes remaining. On fourth down from the St. Vincent 10-yard line, Pete Peterson hit Lewallen Borders for the touchdown and Terrell Johnson kicked the decisive extra point.

Valle 42, Chaffee 15

Chaffee fell behind visiting Valle 35-0 at halftime and suffered a lopsided loss in its Class 1, District 1 opener.

The Red Devils (1-7) had 218 total yards compared to 284 yards for the Warriors (5-3), but big plays spelled the difference.

Chaffee scored a third-quarter touchdown on a 3-yard Brandon Davis run. Davis also ran in the two-point conversion.

The Red Devils got their first touchdown in the fourth quarter as Sam Burnett hit James Reischman with a 13-yard pass. Davis kicked the extra point.

Poplar Bluff 42, Perryville 14

Poplar Bluff held Peryville to 122 yards of total offense to open Class 4, District 1 play.

The Mules (4-4) took a 21-7 lead at the start of the second half on Todd Tinsley's 85-yard kickoff return. Less than three minutes later, junior Steve Atteberry slipped through the Pirates' defense for a 60-yard touchdown run and a 28-7 advantag that put the game out of reach.

Jackson's doubles team of Kim Anderson and Kelly Mitchell won its first-round match but lost in the quarterfinals as the Class 2 state tournament got under way in Springfield.

Anderson-Mitchell defeated Margo Huant-Jessica Krause of Kansas City Park Hill 6-4, 6-1, then lost to Ashley Miles-Whitney Reys of Columbia Rock Bridge 6-2, 7-5.

The Indians' other doubles team that qualified for state, Katie Domian and Lauren Everett, lost twice and was eliminated.

In Class 1, Chaffee's doubles team of Kate Pfefferkorn and Brittney Bennett lost to Jennifer Crawley-Megan Crawley of Barstow 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round.

Volleyball

BELL CITY 15-15, WOODLAND 5-0

The Cubs won big in their final regular-season match before next week's district tournament.

Katie Niemczyk had nine service points and four kills for Bell City (22-5). Sarah Metcalf had 10 points and five digs; Whitney Abner added 10 points and 10 assists.

Bell City's JV won 15-11, 14-16, 15-1.

MSCAA Tournament

Eagle Ridge Christian School and New Salem Baptist Academy advanced out of pool play and into today's semifinals of the Missouri State Christian Athletic Association Tournament in Joplin.

New Salem Baptist (15-8-1) went 5-0-1 in pool play. Holly Jordan had 45 kills, 25 service points and nine aces. MacKenzie Jones added 13 kills, 38 assists, 21 service points and 12 aces. Sarah Jordan served 32 points, 11 of which were aces.
