Everybody knows Courtney Haman can high jump.

But the javelin?

Haman, a recent Cape Central graduate, has accepted an athletic scholarship to participate on the Southeast Missouri State women's track and field team.

Haman was a standout at Central in the high jump this past spring. She was an all-stater in that event, posting a sixth-place jump of 5-foot-4. Had she duplicated her personal best of 5-7, she would have taken first in the event.

Haman also excelled in the triple jump, the 300 hurdles and the 100 hurdles.

But SEMO track coach Joey Haines has different things in store for Haman in addition to the high jump.

"He's going to have me primarily at the high jump and will have me throw the javelin," Haman said. "He's going to start me from scratch. But he's thinking I have a pretty good arm after seeing me play right field for the softball team."

The javelin is not an event taught at most high schools in Missouri, as there is no state competition in that event.

"I've never coached that event and its not even one of our activities," said Central girls track coach Lawrence Brookins. "It's something new. She has the physical ability because she played the outfield and developed a reputation with her arm. She's extremely excited about her potential at the college level. She has no fear. She'll try anything once.

"There's no doubt she can do well in college. She'll do well academically and she knows how to budget her time. But she's looking forward to that challenge. She wants to take a big bite out of life. She's a great figure representing our school and community."

Haman was also offered a scholarship by Southern Illinois University.
