SIKESTON, Mo. — Kelly captured its first win of the season with an overtime victory over Sikeston at the Sports Complex on Thursday, March 23.

A hat trick from Kristin Grogan led the Lady Hawks (1-2-2) in the 3-2 win over the Lady Bulldogs (0-3-0).

“Grogan is an outstanding forward and provides our offense with more opportunities,” said Kelly coach Omar Campos. “Whether it be her crossing the ball to her teammates or just scoring in general. She reads the play very well. Overall, the team's positive effort and teamwork are what provide Grogan with her opportunities.”

Grogan put Kelly up 1-0, but Sikeston tied it with eight seconds left in the first half when Kenzie Ogden scored on a penalty shot.

The Lady Hawks took the lead in the second half on another goal from Grogan, but Emilie Massey scored with four minutes left in the game, tying it once again.

“We had chance after chance,” said Sikeston coach Gabe Dement. “We did a great job of pressuring their passes and keeping it locked on their end for a lot of the second half. We had a really good chance at the very beginning of overtime on a Cate Schrumpf shot from six yards out but it wouldn’t go in for her. It was our third game in four days in our first week of the season and I saw a lot of things we can build on.”

Grogan's final goal came with 1:20 left in overtime.

“The girls did well today on both sides of the field,” Campos said. “They came into the game hungry for a win and never gave up or let each other get down. They make mistakes here and there but they do an excellent job of listening and executing corrections to make them better players.

“The momentum was there throughout the entire game,” he continued. “One of the main goals since the beginning of the season it was to push the ball up. No matter who we put in the game they gave it their all and did exactly what was needed of them. They worked well together and controlled the game which helped them in keeping the ball in our possession a majority of the game.”

Kelly is scheduled to host Westwood Baptist (0-0-0) on Monday, March 27, while Sikeston will host Notre Dame (0-1-0) on Tuesday, March 28.
