JACKSON -- Jackie Givens and Thelma Lemonds were inducted into the Cape Girardeau Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame at their recent annual meeting and banquet held at the Elks Lodge. They were each presented with a plaque and engraved pendant. Both ladies were honored for their meritorious service to the association and to the sport of bowling.
Here is a brief biography of both inductees.
Jackie Givens
Givens began bowling at the old K.C. Lanes in 1958 and is the only charter member of the Cape Lanettes League which originated at the Cape Lanes when it opened in 1959. She has served as president of the league, has been on all committees and was league historian for seven years. She has bowled in the Ladies Four Star Travel league for 20 years and is a charter member of the Ladies Monday Night Scratch Trio League and has served as league vice-president.
Givens was president of the Cape Girardeau Women's Bowling Association from 1989-1995, during which time the State Youth Tournament and State Senior Women's Tournament were held in Cape Girardeau for the first time.
She was elected to the original Associated Board of Directors in 1981 and served through 1985. She was re-elected in 1996 to a three-year term. She was a delegate to the state convention from 1990-96 and served as a teller and assistant to the sergeant of arms at state meetings.
Givens bowls with her daughters, Kim Freed and Tammy Huckstep, in her Wednesday night league. She has worked with the Youth League on Saturday mornings since 1989, when her granddaughter, Jessica Collins, started bowling at the age of seven.
Thelma Lemonds
Lemonds began bowling in the Cape Lanettes League in 1961. She served as treasurer for two years and has been secretary of the league since 1966. She has only missed one night of bowling in the league since its inception in 1961.
Lemonds bowls with her mother, Frieda Lorenz, and daughter, Donna, in the Cape Lanettes League. She has been bowling in the Ladies All-Star Scratch League for several years and was vice-president for four years. She was the secretary-treasurer of the Ladies Four Star Travel League for three years and bowls in the Mid-Summer Mixed league with her husband, J.W.
She was elected to the original Association Board of Directors in 1981 and has been sergeant of arms for the Association since 1990. She has also been a delegate to the state convention since 1991.
