MALDEN, Mo — The Kelly girls’ basketball team blazes past Malden in a season-opening rout, 69-34, on Monday, Nov. 27.

The Lady Hawks (1-0) aggressive defense smothered the Green Waves’ (0-1) attempts to get into a rhythm, forcing turnovers that fueled many fast break chances.

“We tried to focus on pushing the ball and getting some layups in transition. We shot the ball okay from the perimeter,” said Kelly assistant coach Isai Campos. “The main thing about tonight was our defensive pressure. All the coaches try to be very specific with how we want defense to be played at practice and it definitely showed tonight. It was a good team win, but we still have some areas to work on.”

Jada Griggs' explosive offensive outburst, highlighted by 26 points, and Kristen Grogan's sharpshooting from beyond the arc, including five three-pointers, proved to be a major factor in Kelly’s lopsided win.

Kelly will host Woodland (1-1), while Malden plays Puxico (0-2) at home on Thursday, Nov. 30.
