Cape Girardeau resident Brevin Giebler fell out of a tie for the lead but remains among the top pursuers as the MGA 2016 Stroke Play Championship heads into its final two rounds today at Dalhousie Golf Club.
Giebler shot a 1-under 71 in the second round Tuesday to fall two shots behind Travis Mays, who was among three players tied for the lead entering the day.
Mays, of Overland Park, Kansas, followed his first-round 70 with a 69 to move to 5-under for the tournament, two strokes ahead of Giebler and Skip Berkmeyer, of Wildwood, Missouri, who shot a tournament-low, 5-under 67 on Tuesday to jump into contention for the title at 3-under with Giebler.
Mitchell Mather, of Lebanon, Missouri, who completed the trio of leaders after the first round, was the only other player in the field under par at 1-under and was in fourth place after a second-round 73.
The original field of 120 players was trimmed to 58 for today's final two rounds, the first which will start at 7:10 a.m. and the second in the afternoon. The top 50 scores and ties made the cut.
Among those qualifying for final-day play were Holden Chance, of Dexter, Missouri, who is tied for seventh at 3-over after rounds of 71 and 76, and recent Notre Dame graduate Jack Litzelfelner, of Jackson, who was one stroke back in a tie for 11th after rounds of 75 and 73.
