Longtime Southeast Missouri State track & field coach Joey Haines will be inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the USTFCCCA announced Wednesday.
Haines, who coached for 26 years at Southeast before retiring in 2008, will be honored in a induction ceremony Dec. 15 at the USTFCCCA Convention in Phoenix, alongside St. Olaf's Chris Daymont, Haverford's Tom Donnelly, Arkansas and Cal Poly's Lance Harter, Wisconsin's Ed Nuttycombe and Southern University's Johnny Thomas.
Haines also coached at Austin Peay from 1978 to 1982 and Lipscomb from 1971 to 1978. He was an assistant at Lipscomb, his alma mater, in 1969 to 1970.
Haines' men's and women's teams combined for 24 Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships during Southeast's Division II era. In 1985, the men's team won the NCAA Division II indoor title in the meet's inaugural season, and Haines was selected the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year. The men's team finished second twice in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships and once at the Indoor Championships.
The women's teams had three top-four finishes at the Indoor Championships and a fourth-place outdoors in 1991.
Southeast joined Division I in 1992, and Haines' teams men's compiled six Ohio Valley Conference titles while the women won 14 conference titles. The programs had more than 100 conference champions.
Haines was selected the OVC Coach of the Year 20 times. He was also the NCAA Division I Regional Coach of the Year in 1998 and was a six-time MIAA Coach of the Year and Missouri Track & Field Coaches Association Coach of the year.
He was inducted into the Missouri Track & Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Southeast Hall of Fame in 2008.
