Former Southeast Missouri State track star Miles Smith falls short of U.S. Olympic team

Former Southeast Missouri State track All-American Miles Smith saw his dreams of competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics end Saturday night.

Smith placed 13th in the semfinal round of the 400 meters at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.

The top eight finishers advanced to today's finals and the top four today will earn Olympic berths.

Smith posted a time of 45.81 seconds Saturday, better than his 46.09 from Friday's first round that qualified him for the semifinals.

LaShawn Merritt led the way in the semifinals, posting a time of 44.78.

Smith, who placed 12th in the 2008 Olympic Trials, was a five-team All-American at Southeast before completing his eligibility in 2008. He placed sixth at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Smith, who won a gold medal as a member of the USA's 1,600 relay team at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, has been competing professionally since finishing his collegiate career.
