Kelly High School will look to a former Southeast Missouri State University sharpshooter to lead its basketball team this upcoming season.
Former Southeast guard Cory Johnson was hired to replace Nick Lanpher, whose contract was not renewed. Johnson, who is the athletic director and head baseball coach this season, was Lanpher's assistant last season.
Under Lanpher, the Hawks finished the season with 12 wins and lost to Scott City in the district semifinals. Kelly has several of its top players coming back, including Kendal Deason.
"I'm excited about it," Johnson said. "We've got basically the same group of kids coming back."
Chaffee hosts tournaments
Chaffee's undefeated softball team did not do itself any favors when putting together the bracket for this week's Red Devil Softball Classic.
Chaffee (9-0) will open up with Delta at 6 p.m. on Friday, one of three games scheduled. The Red Devils defeated Delta 5-4 on April 8. East Prairie will play New Madrid County Central in one game, and Oak Ridge and Scott City will square off in another.
The championship game is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The Red Devils Baseball Classic also starts on Friday. Oran and Dexter will play at 3:30 in the top matchup of the opening day. Other games on Friday include Chaffee versus Shawnee (Ill.), Senath-Hornersville against NMCC and Scott City taking on Perryville.
The championship game is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. on Saturday.
Central lineman signs
Sean Bard, a two-year starter for Central on the offensive and defensive line, signed with Lindenwood to play football.
Lindenwood, an NAIA school which plays in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, has been home to several Tiger players over the past few years. The Lions have struggled of late, though, only winning three games last season.
SEMO Southern Conference track meet at Scott City
Scott City will try to wrap up a conference track title Wednesday when it hosts the SEMO Southern Conference meet.
With Loren Groves starring in four events and along the distance running of Christy and Angie Laxton, Scott City's girls will enter as the favorite.
Other area teams competing will be Oran and Chaffee.
