BALLWIN -- Ford & Sons Cape Legion dropped its opening two games in the Ballwin Tournament Friday night and was eliminated from title contention.
Ford & Sons first dropped a 3-1 decision to Evansville, Ind., before falling 11-9 to Chesterfield.
Cape Legion, which completes tournament play today against Kirkwood at 11 a.m., fell to 14-14 on the season. Only the top two teams in each four-team pool advance to elimination play.
Against Evansville, Ford & Sons failed to capitalize on a strong pitching performance by Garrett Broshuis, who allowed just three hits in six innings. Broshuis struck out nine and walked two.
But Cape Legion was able to muster just five hits of its own. One of those hits was a fourth-inning solo home run by Steve Fowler that staked Cape Legion to a 1-0 lead. Ford & Sons took the slim lead into the bottom of the sixth where Ballwin scored all three of its runs.
Fowler suffered the loss against Chesterfield. He allowed six hits and five unearned runs in three innings.
Josh McIntosh belted two home runs and Wes Steele added another blast. Matt Bollinger had two doubles and Mark Fisher also finished with two hits. Ford & Sons had 11 hits overall.
Steele hit his home run in the top of the first inning, but Chesterfield answered with two runs in the second and three in the third for a 5-1 lead. Cape Legion closed the gap to 7-6 with a three-run sixth, but Chesterfield pushed across four runs in the bottom of the frame for an 11-6 advantage.
