For children throughout Southeast Missouri, who have a devotion to athletics, and an even stronger pull to Jesus Christ, today’s “Power Camp” at the Cape SportsPlex, which is conducted by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Southeast Missouri, may be as great of an experience as you can combine.
“FCA’s goal is,” FCA Area Director Darrin Scott explained, “can we bring every athlete and every coach to know Jesus and get them into a church where they can grow?
“That really is what our mission is.”
That is the “mission” of the organization, but area athletes ages fifth through eighth grade can get so much more out of the three-day Power Camp experience.
Each athlete will choose two sports to learn and experience, out of baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, sports performance, volleyball, and wrestling.
“We’ll come in,” Scott said of the daily schedule, “and we’ll have a chapel in the beginning, and then we’ll break them up into their “huddles.”
A “huddle” is essentially a group of students, who meet regularly. The young athletes will meet with their “Huddle Leader,” who are trained high school and college students and athletes, who lead the small group sessions.
“It will be six to eight kids,” Scott explained, “where they will talk about the message (from the chapel).”
Following that, the camp participants will attend “Sports Clinic One,” or the first sport that they selected, followed by Sport Clinic Two.
Area coaches and athletes will provide instruction and oversee drills and competitions among the athletes.
Following lunch (which is provided), the camp will host a guest speaker with a life message, before the young people break into another huddle session for more discussion.
To close the day, the campers will participate in some “fun games,” according to Scott.
“We’ll then bring them together again,” Scott said, “for a little message, before we send them home.”
Registration can be done online at www.semofca.org/camp or at the Power Camp site today.
The camp, which costs $35, will run from 8:30 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, and Thursday.
