Major league baseball's disciplinarian is looking into Curt Schilling's destruction of a camera used to evaluate umpires. The Arizona pitcher smashed part of the Questec Umpire Evaluation System last Saturday night during a loss to San Diego and said umpires have told him they are changing their strike zones to match the evaluations of the machine.
George Steinbrenner will get his wish -- for at least one game. Jose Contreras will make his first major league start Friday in Detroit after the Boss told a newspaper he wanted the Cuban defector to take Jeff Weaver's spot in the Yankees' rotation. Weaver hasn't been removed from the rotation. Contreras is just replacing David Wells, who is sidelined with a bruised right calf after getting hit by a ball during his last start.
Expos outfielder Vladimir Guerrero was held out of the starting lineup Tuesday night against the Marlins with a muscle strain in his back. Guerrero grounded into a double play to end Montreal's loss to Florida on Monday and appeared to have trouble running to first base. He is day to day.
A man who had pleaded innocent in the father-son beating of a Royals base coach has changed his plea to guilty and will be sentenced June 18, prosecutors said. The Royals placed pitcher Runelvys Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow. The move was made retroactive to May 17. Right-hander Brad Voyles, who has been up with the Royals the last two seasons, was recalled from Triple-A Omaha.

Rockets owner Les Alexander and general manager Carroll Dawson interviewed Hall of Famer Larry Brown about the Rockets' vacant coaching position, the Houston Chronicle reported on its Web site. Unidentified sources cited by the newspaper said Alexander had not decided going into Tuesday's interview in New York that Brown was his favorite to succeed Rudy Tomjanovich and he also was considering Mike Dunleavy and Jeff Van Gundy, whom Alexander and Dawson met Monday.
Colleges
The University of Miami is moving closer to a decision on joining the Atlantic Coast Conference. The school's executive committee of the board of trustees will meet today to discuss moving from the Big East to the ACC. The university also will host the first of three ACC site visits Friday, the next step in a likely relocation that could drastically change the landscape of college athletics. Miami's executive committee will eventually vote on whether to join the ACC, but university officials don't expect it before the site visit. Hurricanes football coach Larry Coker said Tuesday he expects a decision "sooner rather than later."
