A man who ran on the field at a White Sox game last month and was charged with attacking an umpire pleaded innocent Wednesday. Eric Dybas, 24, of the Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook, is charged with one count of felony aggravated battery and one count of misdemeanor criminal trespass in the case.
Basketball
Chucky Atkins prevented the Pistons from facing the most difficult road in the NBA playoffs. Atkins' layup with less than a second left was goaltended by Derrick Coleman and gave Detroit a 78-77 victory over the 76ers and a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
Aaron Goodwin won his own LeBron James lottery. James selected Goodwin as his agent, a week before 13 NBA teams hope to land the high school star in the draft lottery. James' choice of Goodwin has been expected for months.
Colleges
Jay Price, an assistant coach at Purdue the past 10 years, is joining the coaching staff at Illinois, coach Bruce Weber said. Price, 34, began his coaching career an assistant at Oklahoma for two years before going to Purdue.
Golf
Without ever mentioning his name, Annika Sorenstam brushed off Vijay Singh's comments about her playing in the Colonial, saying he was entitled to his opinion. She also said she thinks she can win the tournament "if all the stars are lined up right," she said Wednesday. PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem urged critics to "just relax" and not worry about Sorenstam playing in a men's tournament.
Horse racing
Funny Cide, with Jose Santos aboard, was made the 7-5 morning-line favorite and will leave from the No. 9 post position in the 10-horse field at thePreakness. Peace Rules was the second choice at 8-5 and breaks from the No. 7 gate.
Motorsports
Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Arie Luyendyk won't race this year because of a sore back and his team, Mo Nunn Racing, is scrambling to find a replacement driver.
Obituaries
NBA Hall of Famer Dave DeBusschere, a forward on two championship teams with the Knicks and also the youngest coach in league history, died Wednesday of a heart attack at 62. The team, which announced his death, had no other details.
Martin "Red" Mottlow, who worked for nearly three decades in Chicago as a sports reporter and anchor at three radio stations, has died of cancer. Mottlow, who died Monday, was 76.

The United States is the front-runner to host this year's Women's World Cup after the tournament was moved from China because of SARS, the president of soccer's governing body said.
Tennis
Monica Seles quit during her second-round match at the Italian Open with a left foot injury that could force her to decide if she wants to keep playing tennis. In other action, fifth-seeded Jennifer Capriati beat Fabiola Zuluaga 6-3, 6-4. Second-seeded Kim Clijsters defeated Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-1, 6-0 in just 39 minutes, while fourth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo advanced with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory over Lina Krasnoroutskaya.
Top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt rallied to beat Arnaud Clement 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the second round of the Hamburg Masters.
