Briefly
Baseball
A fan came out of the stands during Tuesday night's game between the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox and attacked first base umpire Laz Diaz. Security and players came to Diaz's aid and the fan was quickly taken away. Immediately after Carlos Lee flied out to right to end the eighth inning, the fan ran on the field and tried to tackle Diaz, wrapping his arms around the umpire's legs. It was the first appearance by the Royals in Chicago since coach Tom Gamboa was pummeled by a father and son, who came out of the stands last September. Three times earlier Tuesday night, the game was delayed when fans ran onto the field before being tackled by security guards.
The Walt Disney Co. agreed in principle to sell the Anaheim Angels to Phoenix businessman Arturo Moreno for just over $180 million, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Randy Johnson will miss his start against Colorado tonight because of swelling under his right kneecap, only the second time he has not made a scheduled appearance on the mound since the 2000 season.
Basketball
Knicks coach Don Chaney agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep him in New York through the 2005-06 season.
Colleges
Pittsburgh assistant Jamie Dixon will succeed Ben Howland as the Panthers' basketball coach. Dixon has never been a head coach at any level, and he was initially passed over when the school tried to hire Skip Prosser of Wake Forest.
Former Western Kentucky player Darrin Horn was hired as head basketball coach of the Hilltoppers. Horn was an assistant under Marquette coach Tom Crean for four seasons.
By unanimous vote of Kansas basketball players, a parade to celebrate the season has been canceled.
Hockey
Rick Kehoe was fired after less than two full seasons with the Penguins, leaving as the team's only coach since the mid-1980s to fail to make the playoffs.
Maple Leafs forward Shayne Corson left the team, resigning from the organization after three seasons. Corson was a healthy scratch for Monday's 4-3 double overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers and has been discontent with his role on the team for some time.
Obituary
Robert Helmick, a former U.S. Olympic Committee president who resigned amid conflict of interest allegations, died Tuesday at 66. Helmick died of cardiac failure at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, spokeswoman Angie Fagervik-Chia said.
